1974: Men of Action and Adventure

Mego Action Jackson Adventure Set 1974 would see the return of Mego’s original 8 inch figure, Action Jackson. After his original explosion onto the scene in 1973, he would be overshadowed by the success of the many licensed products that the creation of his interchangable body (called a “Happy Accident” by former Mego VP Neal Kublan) allowed.

New additions would include a Race Car and ten lower cost outfits, the Adventure set picture aboved was a bundling of various items that sadly did not see productiom. Also included in the Catalog for what would be his final year was Fighting Yank, Mego’s original action figure would be discontinued this year after a long relationship with the company.

Look for a Mego Museum Fighting Yank Gallery in the coming months. For now please check out the 1974 Catalog newly refurbished Action Jackson and Fighting Yank Sections.

Action Jackson is an interesting phenomenon. He reigned in the 8 inch action figure concept by being the first. But unfortunately he quickly became 'generic' once the superheroes came out. And yet, there were so many of him made during that short run, that it is still very common to find them boxed all over. That's probably the quickest hot to cold turnaround for any action figure in the history of this industry. You compare the distribution with any other short run series, like the Teen Titans, and their extremely rare. Not so with Action Jackson. To see this kind of availability would lead many to think he had been around for quite a while. Fighting Yank was clearly a stab at the GI Joe market. I have one in his original box.

Did anything like the Adventure Set box turn up in the 1974 Toy Fair "find"?

And, on a side note, is there a section of the Museum that records the '74 Toy Fair stuff?

Whoever has it, that is one great box. I know it is retail taboo to do so now, but boy do I miss the illustrated toy box. There was some mystery involved. None of this "Try Me" packaging like they have now.

And while I'm ranting like an ol' fuddy duddy, "you kids get off my lawn!"
                              It's all good!
