Mego of the Week - Starsky and Hutch

Earlier this week we had a thread going about the Starksy and Hutch line. So I thought we’d take a closer look at the line today on Mego of the Week. This line is, of course, based on the popular TV show and as usual Mego did it up right. Not only did we get the 4 main characters and the bad guy (Chopper, really?) we also got Starsky’s Ford Grand Torino. The American version of the car was motorized and had the alley pieces, while the UK version did not. But the UK version has one killer box. Add in the UK versions of S&H and the 2-pack of figures with the guns and there are surprisingly several things to collect in the line. I also think this is a line that would make for a nice set of cards. Just sayin’. For more information on this piece visit the Starsky and Hutch page at the Mego Museum

Great selection! I LOVE all things Starsky & Hutch. I have a couple of the Mego Torinos (one with the box and instructions) and multiple figures of each character. I just about have them all carded too. My next project will be to go after the Palitoy line. The packaging on those is just some of the best ever. Especially the graphics on the double-box set. I don't think there's a week that goes by when I don't watch a couple of episodes. It's one of the rare box sets everyone in my family, from wife to kids, will sit down and watch consistently. I think that speaks well of the series right there. Now if I can find me a real Torino to restore...

A favourite line. Like the introduction says, plenty of items to go after. Funny that the 3 lesser characters are quite difficult to find loose. Maybe they were never popular, thus remaining on cards? Add in all the boot/shoe variations on the UK guys and you've got plenty to go after.

I remember whole endcaps of Dobey and Huggy Bear at "Bi-Way" as a kid. I remember thinking "who would want those guys", turns out it was me.

Interesting. I actually found Dobey, Huggy, and Chopper loose first. If I understood it correctly, I bought one of my loose Dobeys and Huggys that were used as the photo reference in the museum here. Actually the only carded figure I'm missing is Dobey. He's out there. I just haven't plunked down the money yet. Always reasonable too! What I have problems with is getting my Torinos to run. My first one I gave up on and gutted the motor, yanked the front under-wheel and customized the stripes. That's the one I typically show on the forum. My other one has a working motor but there must a gear problem. You can hear the motor spin, but the car won't move. The siren and "effects" work, but God almighty they about kill your ears. Not the most lovely of sounds.

"Bi-Way".. now there's a blast from the past, I forgot about that store.

I always hear about the UK S&H box set coming with guns, but I've never seen a pic, even Paul's pic above doesn't seem to show them. What kind of guns did the box set come with?

Chopper is one of the only Megos I've ripped off a badly damaged card to have a mint loose one. He was the last one I needed to complete my loose S&H set. I do have a set MOC but still want to get a Palitoy Starsky (I guess with Space:1999 legs) and the 2-pack. Someday.

This closed auction below shows a close up of them. I'm not sure if they belong to Action Jackson or not.

Wow. That's where I got my Trek Megos when I was a kid.

I think the secondary Starsky and Hutch figures are kinda rare. I've had a helluva time finding them. (All I have is a nekkid Huggy Bear.) I don't know if I've ever seen a Capt. Dobey for sale.

                    Sadly my set are unarmed.

Bill Frost sent me this pic ages ago from his set. He said that they are quite different from the AJ pistols.

The Palitoy packing is phenominal. I'd luv to buy the 2 pack based on the art alone.
If a Mego figure of God did not exist, it would be necessary for EMCE to invent him.

Even the Palitoy carded versions are superior to what Mego put out state side. I think there might have been a bigger industry for the show overseas than what it was here in America. I always see fan magazines overseas that never seemed to pop up here.

Wow! Okay now I know someone who owns a Starsky Gran Torino. You already rocked in my book...but now... Your a Golden God! Question on your Torino...How often do you take it out and how good a ride is it? I'm looking around for one to possibly restore, but I have never driven one. I use to driving Mustangs and that style car. How is the ride on a Ford Torino and does it have the stock 351 Cleveland in it or something different? That is so sweet! Nice collection bro.

hey tom i take it out maybe every other weekend. i try to do it more but always run out of time. the car drives like a boat but it is fun to drive. it has a stock 351 windsor. i would like to modify the engine but so far i've only done headers and dual flowmaster exhaust. also has rear airshocks to give it that rake.
