Mego of the Week - Over the Rainbow

Today on Mego of the Week we take a peak at the Wizard of Oz line. For me personally this is one of my favorite lines, even though it wasn’t always. Over the years I’ve come to appreciate the work done by Mego employees on it. You have to admit Mego did these characters right. Great sculpts on the figures and some really great playsets with the Munchkinland and Witches Castle. The only thing missing would be a Winkie Guard and a Flying Monkey. For more information on this piece visit the Wizard of Oz page at the Mego Museum.

I personally never really got into this line per say. Although I do have all of the figures boxed and loose and a couple of the play sets in my collection as of now. I never really sought out to collect them originally they just kind of came to me in deals that I could not pass up.

I would agree that Mego did do an excellent job on the figures like them or not.

I don't collect the line (which is kinda strange cause I never pass up an opportunity to watch the movie again when it's on TV), but I do agree that Mego really outdid themselves on these. The sculpts are fantastic and the playsets, especially the castle, really do look cool

Flying monkey on a Our Gang body would have been great.

I remember finding the Tin Woodsman on a store shelf when I was a kid -- probably around 1975 or 1976 -- and throwing an absolute tantrum to get it. This was unusual, since my father was just one or two degrees shy of Lord of Darkness status in my mind, and as such I tended to tread carefully in his presence. Still, I HAD to have the Tin Woodsman, and lo! I got him, and it was an absolute gem of a figure, although it didn't really fit in well with my PotA, Trek, and WGSH Megos. Never got any of the others in the Oz line, and Tin Woodsman ended up vanishing mysteriously at some point, along with all my other Megos. Wish I could remember what department store I found him in... it's probably my most vivid "Mego" memory.

I've been seriously considering picking up another one. Can't decide whether or not to get a boxed one, or if a good loose one would suffice.

I got my boxed Witch at a show in Boston probably in '94 or '95. At the time I didn't know much about the Oz after market and I think I paid $35 for it. I remember thinking I hope I didn't over pay for it but I think it was the first time I had run across a Witch figure. I still have it.

I remember watching these ads on TV as a kid, and kinda wanting them. Then my mom pointed out that playing the WOZ over and over again would get kinda boring (I loved the way she talked outta things we couldn't afford), so I abandoned the idea. But I still really liked the ads. And the Margaret Hamilton mold of the Wicked Witch was spot-on!
