You know, I was just never a fan of these figures. I remember being in a Sears way back when and my mother even offered to buy a Kirk and Spock for me and I passed. For some reason the head sculpts just don't resonate with me. The costume is great, though.
Yeah, I know there are many who will come to the defense of MEGO sculptors because these sculpts are more detailed but If it doesn't look a little like the actors then how can it be a good sculpt? I think the sculptor used picture reference of Commnder, Sonak because that doesn't look like Nimoy. Decker is actually a likeness of Keir Dullea of 2001 - A Space Odyssey, not Stephen Collins as someone else on these boards pointed out recently.
The Knickerbocker plush dolls have plastic heads and better likenesses. Look at that Kirk head!!! It's going to come to life and talk!
Compare MEGO 12" Spock to Kickerbocker above. The MEGO version has all the details Nimoy's face has but the resemblance is not there. The Kirk came closer but I wouldn't call it handsome.
Great review! That made me want to run out and get one! Personally I think Mego went the extra mile with the Star Trek figures in hopes this would reap the same rewards Star Wars gave the industry. It's interesting though. Every time I see a 12 inch Mego figure, I feel a little sad. Because it's a time stamp in my mind of when the company was beginning to fall away from their target audience. They were abandoning the eight inch line and chasing after every scale BUT the one that made them popular. I believe even with the Star Wars debacle, had they just stuck to their guns and kept making new eight inch heroes, television, and movie personalities, they would have survived the downturn at the start of the 80's and stayed in business.
I completely agree. I have the Knickerbocker Kirk and Spock and those head sculpts are way better than the 12" Megos. I would have just used the same sculpters feom the 8" line I think the 12" ones are ugly
