whatever floats your boat. personally, I would not open a vintage carded Mego, unless the card was really rough. but that is jut me. I have no problem opening something if displaying it loose would make me happier.

Current feelings about opening a carded figure?

I just got a Super Powers Joker on card. The card is a beater. The bubble is coming up in the corner a little. I think I'll keep him in captivity a little longer then I might free him. The guy I bought it off even suggested freeing him. I just always wanted an SP figure on the card and this one was affordable.
Soooo set them free or don't. It's all good.Comment

I have one MOC Mego Klingon, the rest are either the loose ones I played with as a kid or the cheap loose ones I've gotten for my kids to play with. I have bought a couple of Retro-Action to keep on the card, but that is because I give the loose ones to my kids and then I've kept the carded ones for me to look at in their original state because I like the way the colors are so vibrant and my kids are a bit rough with toys. I have a loose and carded EMCE Gorn, too. It's all good!Comment

Open it!! OPEN IT!!!!!
BWAHAHAHAAAAA!!!! I never REALLY understood the attitude of folks who collect MIP figures. I guess it's neat to see all the boxes and such lined up and a lot of the older packages are pretty nifty, but if you're a serious collector I'd think hearing about someone opening a figure would make you happy 'cos it increases the value of your carded ones.
....what's weird about the Rebelscum posts is that a lot of folks are saying that opening carded figures is bad, but they're not getting into WHY. So.... it lowers the value of that figure, but given my previous point; how is that neccessarily BAD?
Nerds is SOOOOO weird....

They're called action figures. I think that says it all.
What's the point of "30 points of articulation", if they're never going to be used?
The new SW figures now have extra joints, but most stay on the card...
It saddens me to see great figures (like Hot Toys) that stay in their cardboard coffins, because "they're worth more". All of my 12 inch figures are displayed loose, even if that means they're "worth less"...
I'm not saying you have to rip open your SW 12 backs, that's insane, and I'll keep some of them on the card (for the artwork), but most of them will breathe fresh air!
I do keep some packaging (like my vintage SW), but mostly as a backdrop for the displayed vehicles and figures.
But if you want to keep them MOC, it's your dollar, so enjoy them the way you like.
Personally, I think "loose" is visually more fun...Last edited by Gorn Captain; Jan 25, '11, 8:52 AM..

Carded Megos I keep sealed because I paid a dollar amount for that quality. I have so many loose ones, there's no need to disrupt a carded one. Now newer figures, like the Retros, I open using my 'trap door' approach. It works and keeps the integrity of the package in place.Last edited by MIB41; Jan 25, '11, 10:18 AM.Comment

Wow. I read that entire thread and I don't think I've ever appreciated the Mego Museum message boards as much as I do now. I appreciate their passion, but jeez...lol!!Last edited by vintage spideyfan; Jan 25, '11, 9:21 AM.Looking for MOC Pocket Super Heroes...

Some very valid points coming through and an interesting read. Obviously we're really talking about 'vintage' stuff here. I couldn't give two hoots about opening modern stuff - if I was that bothered i'd buy two.
Personally, I think it's AFA that has caused this shift with the Star Wars stuff, but because AFA has never really made an inroad into Mego (or Mego collectors have avoided its trapppings) it's just not seen as such an issue.
I do remember Pat opening a carded Silver Soldier Ape that caused a few gaspsat the time, so the feeling is there sometimes, but it was his to do as he wished - at least you are guaranteed to get the gloves doing it that way

A common example on a beater card, I say open. Something rare, I say leave it for those who appreciate the packaging, and look for a loose example. Vintagely speaking, of course.
That polar bear comment is hilarious. I actually have a few basic, simple Star Wars questions but I'm afraid to even ask over at RS.Comment
