    MEGO memories

Have any Mego memories you'd like to share?

I remember putting Barbarino on a tree stump and then chopping his head off with an axe. I then grabbed my brother's Washington and put him on the tree trunk. My brother was in the garage and from the back yard I yelled asking him if he still wanted his Washington figure. He said no and I immediately chopped his head off next. As soon as I did my brother comes to the backyard and says "Just kidding."

I was so fortunate to be born in 1967 because that placed me as an impressionable child in those magic Mego years from 1973 to 1978.

I have so many memories, I don't know where to begin.

I remember the neighbor kid insisting Batman came with a removable cowl. I thought he was mistaken as whenever my Mom took me to Kmart, I never saw a removable cowl. Did see those gorgeous Kresge cards and I remember Aquaman. I asked for him or Shazam, not sure which, as at Christmas I opened a Captain America and my parents were concerned because it wasn't who I asked for. I loved he came with his shield.

I also remember seeing a circle suit Spidey and thinking...no,no,no, they got his costume all wrong. I don't want it. Arrrrghhhh!

Was so into Spiderman and saw the Mego ad with Lizard, Goblin, Falcon and Hulk. Grandpa found Lizard and Goblin and I opened those boxes. Another time he bought me a bend and flex Spidey. After a few hours, the wire in his arm broke which might explain why I never bought others.

1975 and walking into a Toys R Us and seeing a wall of carded Megos. My time machine moment.

Seeing Green Arrow for the first time in an Ayr Way and not knowing who he was but he looked really cool in that green and yellow box.

Bought a ton of WGSH from a kid down the street in 1976. He wanted the money for KISS. Got an Iron Man and Falcon.

Wife's giving me the look. Gotta go but thanks for the trip.

I've posted this pic before, but I'm pretty sure this is my first Mego Christmas. You can see who my favorites were. They still are. I know my mother has other pictures like this, but this one stood out to me. This is what the hertiage and legacy of Mego means. More than anything it's a warm and conforting memory. Our children willl never have the same kind of love for toys as we did. Sad.

I almost had a psychic girlfriend but she dumped me before we met.

If anyone here believes in psychokinesis, please raise my hand.

My main one is simple. Since Mego had already started cutting back the WGSH line is it was exciting to go to my friends house, where Captain America, Shazam, and Robin could be added to Superman, Batman, Spider-Man and The Hulk. He and his brother also had *gasp* Joker and Penguin in boxes. He also had the whole Trek crew/bridge so "crossovers" were a regular occurrence.

          Garage sale

Sold all my megos at our garage sale for 50 cents each. Cut the head off my stretch monster to see the ooze come out and created a makeshift voodoo shrine out of the parts. Feeling queazy right about now!

Ordering Iron Man from Heroes World from the coupon in a Marvel Comic.
Gave my mom the money in quarters, dimes, and pennies so she could
                send a check.
Waited six weeks for him to arrive. He was type 2 and so freakin'
awesome. I cut out the picture on the back of the box and blackened
                out his eyes.

You were already customizing! I remember trying to mix a Captain America head and a Superman outfit to make an Atom figure. I'm still trying to make an Atom figure 34 years later...

This was 1975 - I remember because I filled out the order coupon
in my math class and I was sitting next to Donna Kramer - and
fifth grade math was the only class we had together.

I have a picture of my first day of preschool, in one hand a Yoda figure, in the other hand Batman and Robin Megos.

I also have a very faint memory of riding in the back of my parent's Buick and going to Sears to get a Superman Pocket figure and was crushed they didn't have one. My parents exhausted themselves looking thru all the pegs (which seemed endless, and enormously high in the air).

All to no avail. No Superman. After a symphony of tears, my heart settled on a Spiderman Pocket figure and still remember holding it in my hands on the way home in a dreamy, joyful state of awe and contentment.

Although, not Mego, I have very vivid memory of being in South Carolina with my parents (late 70s/early 80s) and this awesome Spiderman Silly Putty container washed up on shore. ( I didn't know what it was, all I knew is that Spidey's head showed up out of nowhere)

It seemed huge and wonderful to me at the time. As I stood there holding it, in a state of joyful delirium, I was unexpectantly blasted with a giant wave. I dropped the Spidey head, never again to be found. (God bless her) my Mom helped me look for it for 15 minutes or so.

The ocean gave, and the ocean took away.

Well, everyone here knows I didn't own much in the Mego world as a child, (Lainie and 2 AJs), so I won't go into those...but I used to watch WNEW Ch. 5 in NYC after school as a kid. And they ran pretty much every Mego commercial. I used to like to recite along w/ the commercials. I was really thrilled years later when I found the Mego commercials video at a toy show.
"Do you believe, you believe in magic?
'Cos I believe, I believe that I do,
Yes, I can see I believe that it's magic
If your mission is magic your love will shine true."

My earliest Mego memory (I was maybe 3? 5?) was getting a Batman, only to be devastated when his crest fell off nearly immediately.

In a moment of creative, though devious, inspiration, I pulled off a leg and went crying to my mom that it broke - which worked, as she proceeded to buy me a new Batman.

I may have gotten my new Batman, but the guilt for scamming my mom has stuck with me all these years! Lol.

I remember the glory and envy that enveloped me when my best friend, George, showed me the Green Arrow his grandma had just bought him. I can still see that vivid green box. George lived with his grandparents and they always seemed to buy him the newest toys the moment they came out.

For all the time I hung out with George, we never really played with our Megos together. We ran around outside, rode bikes, etc. But Megos were something I played with alone. Not sure why.
