What if Mego had acquired the Star Wars license?

It was Lucasfilm employee Charles Lippencott and Fox attorney Marc Pevers that actually approached Mego, and I'm sure that they were shown the door before scale was even talked about. Kenner's president at the time, Bernie Loomis, supposedly came up with the 3 3/4" scale himself, it wasn't mandated by Lucasfilm.
As to what scale Mego would have done these in, that's a very interesting question. By that point, they were dabbling in three scales (3 3/4", 8" and 12") so who knows which way(s) they would have gone?Comment

I think they would have done 3.75 because of the oil problems in the late 1970's. It would have made better financial sense. Plastic was expensive! There were very many figures to do for Star Wars. I think Mego would have done great like Kenner. Would Kenner have been succesful without Star Wars?Comment

Kenner was already successful with the SMDM line. Every kid knew Kenner's name from SMDM.
Market concerns aside, it's nice to think what would have been if Mego had produced Star Wars in the 8" line. To that end, the recent 1978 Reimagined Mego Catalog is a great look at what it could have been like.Comment

Why doesn't someone approach Hasbro about this issue of an 8 inch Star wars Line. The 3 3/4 inch sw line is getting very old fast. How many times can you have the same figure issued and it seems to me they need something new to revive Star Wars collections. The packaging is very cool how they come on the original card with a newer articulated figure, but wouldn't it be so much cooler to have an 8 inch super detailed Solo and Chewie? How bout an Anakin and a Vader? I think it would be huge for SW and Hasbro.Comment

I agree about Hasbro doing an 8" Star Wars line, it shouldn't be a big risk because Star Wars seems to sell no matter what. I think Hasbro should develop an 8" line for GI Joe, Marvel and Star Wars, start with smal assortments and if one line doesn't sell shift the bodies and resources to Star Wars, which should be a sure thing.Comment

^ yeah but the Kenner and Hasbro 12" stuff was crap. they had little articulation...with the exception of the final OTC that came out....Luke, Boba and one other...Darth??Comment

Sansweet is leaving Lucasfilm in April.
I think an 8" line is an excellent idea for SW, especially in light of the line's retro packaging (which resembles and reproduces the original cards from 1978). An 8" line would be more of a retro project. The biggest problems with the 12" and other sizes was cost and storage.Comment
