What if Mego had acquired the Star Wars license?

From the land of what if...

I wonder if they would have introduced 8" figures or the 3" figures?
I remember the initial offering of the Kenner figures and they were a huge letdown.
If Mego did, in fact, get the license, would they have still been in business well into the 80s?
I would have loved to see Mego's take on SW, especially in the 8" line.

I would hope they'd look something like this....cause these are perfect:

I vote 8" just like the ReMego catalog above. I'd like to believe all our want list would include light sabers, blasters and bandoliers.

hmmm I would hope they would have been done in 8" but they did do Buck Rodgers in 3 3/4" I guess we will never really know for sure. But I'm willing to bet had they took on the Star Wars toys they would still be in bussiness today.

I loved my 8" MEGO figures and their 3.75" Comic Action Heroes counterparts but I'm actually glad Kenner got the Star Wars license. Their decision to do the the figures in the 3.75" format, which offered way more possibilities in terms of vehicles and playsets, was, in my opinion, a very good thing. Odds are MEGO would have done the figures in 8" scale which would have limited the line to pretty much no vehicles and very few playsets.

            Hasbro would own them.

They would have made enough money to get through the difficult economic times of the early 80's until...

Their relationship with Takara would have landed them the Transformers license building the company even more and then...

Nintendo would have been so impressed with how big they were that continued their distribution agreement with Mego, building Mego into the biggest toy company in the world (mwoo haa haaa!)...

Mego would have then expanded from gaming systems to home computers with their acquisition of a small comapny called Microsoft, bringing the PC into homes 5 years earlier..

This would lead to unheard of donations to hand-chosen political candidates and the creation of a new, booming third political party. But taking over America would not be enough...

Marty would use his ever-expanding influence to give teeth to the the recently-moved-to-Bohemia, Long Island United Nations. Soon the entire world would be under the MC flag!!!

or they would have been bought buy Hasbro.

Actually, I would bet they would have been 12" figures as Superman the Movie had then and STTMP did as well.

And then be bought out by Hasbro
                It's all good!

They would've kicked Kenner's behind in terms of figures (assuming they did them in 8-inch scale like their other properties at the time) but I think Mego's vehicles would've killed it. Star Wars was/is one of the rare toy lines where the vehicles are almost more important than the figures and although 8-inch Star Wars Megos would've been FAR cooler than the Kenner 3 3/4 inch ones; their vehicles likely would've been limited and looked like the corny Mego Batcopter I fear. I just can't see Mego making a cool X-Wing Fighter or Tie Fighter...not as cool and movie accurate as Kenner's offerings. So figures-wise I would say Mego would've taken the cake, but vehicles would've been the company's shortcoming I think.

I really don't see how Mego would have done better. I mean Kenner marketed an empty box for Pete's sake. I doubt any one could have pulled that off.

Mego would have went on to be the king and masters of all toy makers out there still pumping out toys today. The retro line would have never been needed because the super hero line would have never stopped.I can imagine them making them in all 3 scales. If only, if only.

I believe they would have done well initially but possibly lost the license before Empire came out. Remember the 12' Kenner line while nice looking was discontinued.
Also at this stage in the game Mego had already and was continuing to discontinue figures. Kenner was introducing new stuff constantly to where there 90's plus Star Wars figures when the line met it's demise. Sure there were peg warmer's but how many characters would have even received much of a chance under Mego's critieria?

george lucas did approach Mego but they wanted to do 8" scale and he wanted them to be 3.75 scale...so had they taken the licence they would have had to do the smaller scale. and based on the other product they did in that scale, the figures would probably have been crappy with no facial paint

It was Lucasfilm employee Charles Lippencott and Fox attorney Marc Pevers that actually approached Mego, and I'm sure that they were shown the door before scale was even talked about. Kenner's president at the time, Bernie Loomis, supposedly came up with the 3 3/4" scale himself, it wasn't mandated by Lucasfilm.

As to what scale Mego would have done these in, that's a very interesting question. By that point, they were dabbling in three scales (3 3/4", 8" and 12") so who knows which way(s) they would have gone?
