Maybe it's just me but I always got this Reggie Mantle gone bad vibe from the Mego Riddler.I'm never going to be able to look at that sculpt again without hearing the Archies song in my head. lol.
For WGSH I would have to agree that Sue Storm just looks too angry and the Thing just looks like he forgot to close his mouth, kinda like a turkey in the rain. It's all good!Comment

>Captain America- The big googly eye's take away a lot
Oh yeah.... but I think Cap's a near-miss. A couple minor tweaks aand he'd rock: fix the sleeves on the costume, and repaint the eyes. They SHOULD be blue, and if you look real close you can see that the weren't sculpted as huge as they are after painting. He's got lower lids that are painted white.

I just did a count of how many different Megos we have shot down... an amazing 25! Hmmmmm. I wonder if Mego would have faired any better then EMCE had there been the collector market and forum back then? It's interesting to think about.Comment

I dont mean to hurt a lot of folks feelings, but, Batman has always looked very foolish to me. Even as a kid I thought the head sculpt was intended to be goofy - like a 'parody figure'. (Nutty Mad, Rat Fink, etc.)
Always thought that Tarzan looked like Adam West with longer hair!
NO love for Chopper? Of course he looks like a Neanderthal, hes SUPPOSED to! ...Thats like saying that you dont care for the Lizard because he looks too much like a Lizard!
I think that the C.H.I.P.S. characters suck personally, those head sculpts stink to high heaven...the more I look at them, the more d-d-d-dumb they seem. I mean come on, who WOULDNT want an ENGOURGED visage of Estrada, grotesquely over-sized, complete with zombie make-up and WHITE eyes -OH - and wearing a POLICE uniform to boot - he should have a CLOWN suit for full effect! ....Sounds like something that fell outta 'Slipknot' or was hanging at the bar with Charles Manson!

For Trek, I'd also agree on Gorn and of course, who could forget the Mugato. The Keeper, Klingon and Romulan more than make up for it though..
Hutch was 'sort of' right in the eyes, but the hair could have been better.
Catwoman could have been much better as well.Peace.. Through Superior Firepower.

I saw a repaint of Hutch a while back and it showed that the sculpt actually wasn't that bad.
I would say bad sculpts should include 12" Buck Rogers for not resembling Gerard. Chopper was a definite FAIL and I was never a fan of the 12" Captain America either.Bugler, sound the advance.Comment

I might be off a bit here, but I think that the sculpting imperfections (in some cases inaccuracies-especially with the Ledy figures) adds to the novel innocence, and naivete of the line.
The gigantic head on the 12" Captain America for instance...that's the reason WHY I like him. The fact that Mego made the head too big for whatever reason and yet decided to use it anyway probably to save money, and the fact that it is brimming with 1970s awkwardness is pretty awesome to me. IMHO
I mean if you think about it, they're all pretty goofy...they all look like they're wearing pajamas.Comment

Good points Timb. And like I've said before, I think many of us tend to forget these were low priced toys. It was nothing to go in and spend $2.00 or $3.00 and walk out with a freshly boxed Mego. 12 inch GI Joes were nearly twice as much. Those roles are reversed today. You are far more likely to spend twice as much for a Retro hero than a 12 inch Joe (excluding the specialty releases of course).Comment

That's a good likeness, but I alaways thought she was a shrunk down Farrah (also a Mego figure).

Yeah, that's why I didn't list too many that weren't that great. Megos just bring out the 8 year old in all of us, I think. We didn't care about head-sculpts, and costume accuracies. We just wanted our fave guys. Admittedly, I didn't own any iconic characters back then, but I loved watching the commercials. And even the poorest kid on the block had a least one Mego (usually Spider-man or Batman), so they were fun and affordable. And as an adult, give me the cheesiness of Mego over "screen and comic accurate" action figures any day."Do you believe, you believe in magic?
