Some Star Trek Science by Mego

Todays Update: Two Star Trek Science Kits.

Today's entry is not one but two of the ill fated 1977 Mego Star Trek Science kits. These were Mego's smart foray into the world of educational products, smartly utilizing the appeal of Star Trek. Toy buyers weren't impressed because as you know, many kids who grew up watching Star Trek had absolutely no interest in science......

Well, Science kits aren't posh in general.

Heh, that's cause it's a pressure chamber too. Creepy.

It's hard to believe that these didn't make the cut, LOL.

I like the SMDM Crystal radio backpack better. Maybe Mego should have tried to make an actual Enterprise playset console into a Crystal radio, and used the communicators for that, (ala Command Communications Console).

In the seventies no self respecting toy buyer would even consider this stuff, but now is a different story. Star Trek branded science toys could be a big deal if handled properly. Even more so a couple of years ago when the educational toy store boom was still on. theres still a big ol' pile of educational toy stores around....if only Playmates had a clue!

That would have been a good idea! I can't see childhood me wanting these at all. :(

That said, I am fascinated by these suggestions. Is there any info on the back and forth discussion on how these came about and were declined?

Those pressure chambers were popular in the later 80's but the kind you pressed the side of the tube on that activator would have leaked big time

You gotta give 'em credit for trying. But I have to admit as a kid I wasn't interested in anything like this either, I wanted REAL toys
