The Mego King Kong Board Game

Todays Update: The Prototype King Kong Game.

Mego pitched a few fun board games but none more awesome than one based on the 1977 remake of King Kong. I'm actually a little angry this didn't see release!

    Neat!

Kong looks like an Aurora kit doctored up for the set.

It does look like Kong can turn around. If - while doing that - he could also roar, this board game would've been the hottest item in the toy stores. I certainly would've wanted one

And while spinning, maybe he would use that beam to knock unsuspecting planes down to their doom even as they tried to fly up and destroy him.

Looks like it would have been fun!

That's so neat. I would certainly have wanted that epic slice of Kong gaming coolness!

How cool that would have been to have actual audio excerpts from the movie while your playing the game?!! Too neat. I wish that would have seen the light of day. Well I do have the alternate version they put out. That's a fun one too.

Is that a re-purposed Aurora Kong model?

I have a board game from the 70's remake that my family played when I was a kid. Were there 2 licenses?

Ideal also made a King Kong board game based on the '76 remake.

I think like the Laverne and Shirley game because Mego chose not to pursue this avenue, the license was offered to others.

That would have been one awesome game, too bad it wasn't made. Mego offering the sublicense to Ideal instead makes sense. Would that mean that Mego's name could possibly be included in the copyright info on Ideal's packaging? (like the way that Mego's name is mentioned on the items released in Japan)?

I doubt it, I think it's simply a case where Mego's license didn't include board games, the same way it obviously didn't include the colorforms set. More than likely it was a "first right of refusal" situation.

As for the stuff in Japan, I think that's the case of Lion Rock selling that stuff to other distributors.

BTW, one small tidbit I forgot about. When I spoke with Ken Sheller, he mentioned sculpting a "Kong Board Game figure that never saw production" one can only imagine this is it.

Nice. I wonder on this as well what the "no" reason was.
