Poorly done rooted hair, like on the Star Trek Vina prototype, is going to look bad. Just like a poorly done sculpt is going to look bad. When something is done right, it's going to look good. When done right, rooted hair looks great.
Mattel can do terrific looking rooted hair on even the cheapest of playline level Barbies. If Mattel can do top quality rooted hair on an $8 Barbie, there is no reason why higher price collector dolls couldn't do the same. I think some companies just lack the experience with working with rooted hair to pull it off really well.
That being said, I think the Dr Girlfriend figure looks great as is. But it does lose some of the that vintage Mego style with molded hair. Still, it's a great looking doll and nicely captures the look of the character.
