Nothing again today. The waiting is really hard. But I know it's worth it.

It's a nice sentiment, but the truth is that MEGO was done in by high
interest rates on a new factory in China and from putting a lot of R&D
into electronic hand held games. Over the space of a few years, that
                combination drained their resources.

1978 was a good year for the Mego Corporation - thanks partly to
Micronauts and WGSH. Like any good company, they kept pushing the
envelope on product development instead of just making more of the
                same thing.

1978 was chosen for the catalog since 1977 was the last year of
                new 8 inch figures.

I'm a history buff and I feel it's important to know what really happened,
                warts and all.
That's true. But I still think Mego made a mistake totally abandoning the 8" format (for several years anyway) and not refreshing lines that were still successful. Imagine a toy company doing that today. Nothing new to show at toy fair, no new assortments. Eventually, orders will die off.

Obviously we think the 8 inch line is the cat's meow, and it breaks my heart
that, even though it was the star of the company, Marty doesn't have much
                    to say about it.

In terms of the overall company, it brought in less money than Cher or Farrah,
didn't require much R&D attention, and sold itself to retailers. Like classic
board games - the money it brought in financed other ideas.

                    WGSH don't get any respect.

                      .
Another salient point. Unless you talk to somebody who was around in '74 or '75, most of the former mego people I talked to had nothing to say about the WGSH because they didn't spend any time on it.

It's like that line got put on autopilot to concentrate on the next big thing.

I'd also mention the rise of oil (and hence plastic) prices. And although they put a lot into R&D, they just never had that breakout hit that MIGHT have helped them deal with the finanacial outlay of the factory, the R&D and the resource costs.

Sometimes I wonder if Mego's 70's success was really just them riding the wave of the WGSH line. Yes, I know they had success with Star Trek and Apes, but none compared to WGSH. I realize the blaspheme of such a suggestion, but it is really just a thought.

                          Now where's my catalogs?!?!?
                          WANTED - Solid-Boxed WGSH's, C.8 or better.

In Belgium too, but it's still gonna take a while, stuff's been piling up in the US for a couple of days now.
