How many "discovered" rare Mego's make a dent in value ?

The Shark talk got me thinking ....

Some Mego's are rare -- I mean crazy rare.

For every new one that surfaces the value of the rare piece must go down a small percentage (perhaps so small it's unseen).

I'm not too sure how many Sharks there are out there (in collectors hands) so i'd rather use something even more rare for the example.

    Maybe a MOC Iron Man.

I think I heard there's only 2 out there (I could be wrong)

Anyway, let's say there are two out there.

How many carded Iron Man's must surface to make it's value substantially less ?

I'd say a good half dozen on a character like Iron Man, there are a lot of people after it and they would come out of the woodwork. Like anything, the first one would be high, the next one not so much and so on and so forth.

Maybe a little less on something foreign like Jet Jungle or BASA Steve Austin because some people just don't do foreignmego. Not saying demand would plummet, you'd just see a sharper decline in return on each one sold.

yup look at my 24 moc aquaman case fresh find

1st lot hit the high notes

and i had 9 variants amongst them

prices ranged between $150-$800 deppended on the card condition, figure placement, and the variants of course

dont get me wrong no collector in usa or canada paid $800 for a moc aquaman that went to a collector in japan

but i think i could have sold them twice over to be honest with you... the worlds a big place there are a lot of collectors who came out of the woodword as mentioned

some collectors fought tooth and nail to get there moc

But did the Aquaman's truly change the market to this day ? ... Or only temporarily while there was still thought (perhaps more and more will surface soon).

I do think the 24 yellow carded Aquamans have changed the market for them to this day. It was arguably a $500-800 piece before the "find." Now I would put it at $300-400.

That's not to say it would not go back up if the market has truly completely absorbed all of them (though I do not think it has absorbed them yet because there are probably still some in flipper's hands).

I think a set of SI/AEs is a great example, pre ebay, a set was considered much rarer than first thought and one set even sold for $12K. One of the first (mint) sets to appear on ebay sold for around $7K plus, individual figures were selling at $1.5K, then the s**t hit the fan as more and more mint sets hit the market on ebay. I remember it got so bad that that a set with mailer boxes passes unsold for $4K until Mike bought it. I would value a mint set at around $3500 now.

The obvious X FACTOR is what happens when any collector puts a value on an item that can be "out of whack" (so to speak) with "the market" . . .just because he/she wants to for any host of reasons.

In valuations, the "highest price paid ever" could skew the Fair Market Value, and since we are dealing with nostalgia and collector preference in these purchases, this is all such a wonky vehicle for knowing the "true $$$ value."

Yeah, some previously unknown foreign figures can be extremely volatile in prices as more examples show up. I remember when the first (?) BASA Wonder Woman showed up on ebay it sold for around $500 I think, but after that auction, more suddenly turned up on ebay (big surprise!) and by the time the third or fourth example sold, I think it was less than $50. This might be an extreme example though.

Well, with the BASA WW, I think that many started to realize that despite its irregular appearance on the market, it really is a crappy toy.

. . . okay, her outfits are cool

I can't remember if the first Basa WW sold for $500 (I can hardly believe it), but the price did plummet after the first couple. I remember Basa WW going for $10 or not selling at all

Actually now that I think about it, I think you're right Thomas, the first one may have been closer to $300 (I think Heath was the one who bought it, sorry if I'm opening old wounds, Heath!). There just wasn't much sustaining demand for what is really a rather creepy, ugly looking doll (or as Bryan put more bluntly, "crappy").

That and she's 12", not everyone is into that scale

That's true too. I avidly collect vintage 12" figures along with 8" ones, but I sometimes forget how unpopular that scale is with many folks here.

Yeah, 12" BASA WW tuned out to be a real turkey. The icky blowmold body and babydoll face didn't help. 12 more at market really put the nail in the coffin. If she'd been an 8" figure on a Mego Style body, things would've been a little different. From now on I'm not in such a rush to be thie first in line to a new discovery. At least that's what I tell myself.
