Yeah Mego had the Nintendo license first, too bad it came way too late.

Bill Baron negotiated that deal for Mego.

I always thought that if Mego could have held on a bit longer and was involved in the release of the NES, it may have really helped them bounce back.

Not to mention they'd have been first in line for Takara's brand of transforming robots.

Yeah, I've thought about that too (of course, one big element of Hasbro's success with the line was having the whole Transformers storyline and character lineup developed, complete with cartoon series, Marvel comic book etc. I've always wondered if Mego would have went that far developing a whole concept and marketing scheme like this if they had a shot at Takara's Micro Change/Diaclone toys) . But if they could have done something similar, damn, too bad they couldn't have hung in there for even one more year or so.

They might; since they did something similar with the Micronauts. (Which was what inspired Hasbro to do the 80's GI Joe....)

I understand these fetch a decent price from electronic game collectors, especially if they have the box and instructions.

I've wondered what this license and a continuation of their relationship with Takara would have done for Mego. I really don't see the same type of creative flair and luck at the end of the 70's that Mego had at the beginning and middle of the decade. Either one of these lines would have helped, but both may have done wonders for the company.

I think Mego would have been quick to do the Marvel comics angle, seeing as they set the trend on that one with Micronauts.

Marty Abrams was a real crusader when it came to children's advertising laws, he even went to Washington. I have no doubt that had Mego still been afloat when Reagan changed those laws, they would have been the first to launch animated shows.

                        Brian,
I'm not familiar with those laws. What were they and how were they changed to allow toys-based cartoons?

Good point about the comics, I forgot about Micronauts, and also Mego obviously had a long relationship with both Marvel and DC at that point (now that I think of it, I wonder if Micronauts was orginally pitched to both, I've never read how Marvel ended up publishing it). I didn't know that Marty went to Washington over the laws. Wow, there's another reason why it was a shame that Mego couldn't have held on a bit longer (in this case to take advantage of the change in the children's advertising laws)
