...place a bid on ebay, then spend the rest of the auction praying that someone outbids you? Is there a word for that?

Been there done that. I just call it almost spending money you don't readily have

I am usually the other way around, if I know I will not be able to get to a computer at the time the auctions ending I pray my high bid will hold up!

I think the ebay fever gets the best of me sometimes, and then I start to convince myself I've over-payed. So there's some measure of relief when I get the email telling me I've been outbid.

Of course that is soon followed by just a touch of regret....

I do that all the time! "Oh god please let somebody out-bid me... Damn! I lost the auction!"
