    Mego Made Good Toys...

Okay, this might seem like an odd topic, but I got a ton of AJ stuff in the mail today. Low and behold I had two different strap on helicopters. Both looked in fairly rough condition.

One was in better shape than the other, so I decided to pop some batteries in to see if she was still kicking. Not only does it work, it works like NEW.

Then I looked at the other one. No way it could work. It was beat up pretty bad and the inside metal pieces were falling off. I popped the batteries in and with a little fidgeting, BOOM she flies!

Pretty impressive if I do say so myself. Not only are these things old, but they've seen tons of playware and yet they still work.

Yep, I had five, sold 2, kept 3 and they all work! But one works so fast, sometimes it smells like it's burning.. The only thing wrong w/ them is that the hand grips are all broken off. My kids like to use them for Batman and Robin. In fact, they like to use the rescue copter as the Bat Copter too.

I reckon if these 30+ year old toys can stand up to my 2 year old nephew they are pretty amazing. Okay, there's a Spidey in hospital as we speak...but he'll be right as rain in a couple of days.

That damn copter backpack is one item that still eludes me. I have one with no propeller and a broken handle. Missed out on a few lots with one or two in it.

It is amazing that these things have lasted so long. Mego was all about the product. For example, compare to a Super Joe...
            It's all good!

I just got a Micronauts Phobos off Ebay and, after a minute to warm up, the motor works perfectly! Ironically, I had to return my first Phobos to JCPenneys when I was a kid, because the motor didn't work out of the box.

Even though AJ items are not as rare as most and are more or less still able to be purchased with little to no trouble, one of the main things that has brought me back are all the accessories that the AJ line provided. Multiple vehicles & outfits were just the thing to provide hours of fun and imaginative creativity. Almost all of my AJ items are still functional after thirty years…..pretty impressive considering most toys know a days fall apart before a child has outlived its fun factor.

really take a look at the rubber bands they used inside the T2 bodies and female bodies for that matter. Over 30 years old and most are still tight... in other toys such as Masters of the Universe and 80's GI Joe the rubber breaks so easy ... or at least loosens up on their own. Mego made things to last.

Agreed, but my kids have managed to do some damage. They stepped on Robin and broke his leg - like, snapped it, not popped the knee. They also cut a hole in the middle of his cape (something they deny), but I can't blame the manufacturer for that. I of course made a show of being angry. But at the same time, it felt good to see kids beating up an original Mego in 2009.
