I'm betting DC requested they change the face. The one with more detail looks kind of old, which is one complaint someone at DC leveled at Curt Swan at the time, so they asked him to reduce the lines he drew on his face. Could be the same thing.

That's a very sound theory Chris, you're right, the one face has a leathery look to it. It also looks kind of sinister...

That's an attainable goal Clem, he's easiest (and cheapest) of all of them.

Huh, the variation certainly has the feel of Christopher Reeve's evil Superman breaking the bar mirror with peanuts.

              Great update to the Museum.

At first I thought perhaps they had just simplified the face to make production easier, but they are quite different from one another. One does not appear to be a simplification of the other. Chris' theory sounds pretty good.

Cool. Presumably then the Lone Ranger and Batman also would have the face variations? (didnt they all use Supes head under their masks?)

I dont know if its the technology itself, but Supermans "voice" sounds exactly like Big Jims voice from the talking backpack, rescue pack, and the Rescue Rig walkie talkie!!

Not a big fan of "stuffed animals" but if I had to buy one it would most certainly be this Superman.

No, Bruce Wayne has a distinct face although it shares the heavy shading of the early Supes. All Lone Rangers I've seen seem to be the early supes under a mask.
