Many months ago I needed an AJ Air Force helmet for one of my POTA Astronauts. Prices on eBay for the helmet were more than I wanted to spend. I eventually purchased the whole Air Force boxed outfit for around $30. This morning I was monkeying around with a Soldier Ape and decided to dress him up in the AJ Aussie Marine uniform with the Army helmet. Then I added the Soldier Ape in the AJ Navy uniform. I decided that I would the Air Force to the picture, so I took the card out and cut off the strings. To my surprise, I noticed that the yellow backer card added a brown spot to the flight suit. I was also surprised how sheer it was and it was easily cut by my fingernail. But for a 53-year old outfit, I guess that's to be expected.

I used an AJ pilot jumpsuit with white belt and boots & Mego Little John head for a Landonesque custom Astronaut.

Is there anyway you can remove the spot? I know in the past there have been posts on how to remove spots, mostly ink or marker, but perhaps there’s some kind of cleaner that might remove it or at least fade it out a little.

I'd probably put some DAWN dish soap on it and let it set for awhile-That may break it up some/remove it.

I have used Dawn dish soap a couple of times in the past and both times it worked really well, good luck!

My fear is that because the material is so thin, I'd tear it. Picture #2 shows the line where my thumbnail touched it while removing it from the backer board.

I noticed the material looks kind of meshy, very delicate and 50 years old. You could soak it in warm water and dawn dish soap overnight and see what happens? but I wouldn’t try to rub it out, just lightly pat dry it or just let air dry.

I had to clean a dark spot off my mego Shazam outfit and with instructions from another member, I used warm water and dawn dish soap, and gently rubbed it with a soft bristle toothbrush, it worked great, but in your situation I would not recommend rubbing it at all, (the material) just lightly pat it dry or air dry, or leave it as is, as long as it’s not bothering you to look at.

^^^^^ If he'd go the Dawn dish soap route, I definitely agree with lightly patting it, not rubbing it together or anything like that. ^^^^^

i failed to mention that your picture of the Soldier Ape decked out in the Aussie Marine outfit reminded me of some photos someone mailed to me years ago: He had a Soldier or two decked out like that, I remember he even had a Mego sized beret on one of them.

Yesterday I removed the jumpsuit from the gorilla. A slight tug on the pants leg did cause another tear. The material is super cheap.

That sucks... How would you say the material of the Navy & Marine outfits compares? More durable? Same weaknesses?

A heck of a lot more durable. They're like Dr. Zaius' jacket and pants. The Air Force jumpsuit is like 2-ply tissue paper. I've never encountered anything like this with Mego.

I recently purchased a boxed Navy set as my two other Navy uniforms were incomplete. And guess what? The material is the same as the Air Force uniform! I didn't tear it when I removed it from the packaging but it is very sheer and I could barely get it on a vintage AJ. It is extremely tight on the body. It is totally different material than on my other two Navy uniforms.

On the positive side, I can use one of my other Navy uniforms for my AJ if the "new" one tears. I really only bought the boxed set to get the binoculars and an extra M-16A1.
