The reason this place rocks - the people!

For those of you who don't know me - a hearty "Howdy! to you - my name is Derek, and I hail from the heartland of Kansas. For those of you who do know me - my apologies for being absent of late.

By way of quick background for this story - I work in a job that pays well, but works me like an indentured servant (my schedule for the last nine weeks has been 14-18 hours a day, seven days a week), which is why I haven't been around much of late. In fact, because of my job I have missed out on many things this year, not the least of which was Mego Meet just a few weeks ago. I work for a company that produces Tax Software for the high end CPA market, so traditionally we have worked like dogs from October to April, but been able to enjoy the summer months. Within the last year, our company has gone truly global, and our deliveries now come year round without pause. One of the deliverables caused me to miss the Meet as the dates coincided. This is the first Meet I have had to miss, which really bummed me out. The Meet is one of those lights at the end of the tunnel for me, and I really just feel like I am stuck in a neverending tunnel.

The first kindness came from all of my friends here who commiserated with my not being able to attend. It means a lot to know that something I dearly love also loves me back a little Chuck - I still laugh at your image of "4 fat white guys" kidnapping me with a van in broad daylight I also contacted ChrisDVM (who is just plain "awesome") and asked if there was a figure left over during the Meet could I please be in line to pick up one from him.

The second kindness was a call from DaveMc from the MegoSuite during the Meet. For the uninitiated - the show is gravy, but the MegoSuite is the sausage and biscuits - come for the show, but GO TO THE MEGOSUITE! It was awesome to get to hear some of the goings on and to know that I was missed. Truly, it meant a lot, especially since I will not get to see most of you again until next year. Sadly, once the call was over, it was back to work for some more last minute work on our Beta deliverable.

This last Sunday we were finally able to call it "good enough" and to take a breather. So, on Sunday, I was able to take my first day off since Easter. I contacted ChrisDVM again to see if any of the Kromedomes were left over. At the time his response made no sense to me (probably because my brain is currently oatmeal from overuse) - "Check your mail". So I checked my email, but there was nothing there. Confused but exhausted, I crashed, and I did not wake until 4PM Monday afternoon when the doorbell rang. It was the UPS guy with a package for me. Inside the package was a third kindness - my good friend Chuck Gregory (incidentally, that phrase still makes me laugh after more than two years) sent me a care package with a Kromedome inside, and a T-Shirt proclaiming our shared bond for love of the Boston Red Sox:

Inside there was a note from Chuck that said the Meet wasn't the same without me, and the whole thing brought an actual tear to my eye. In fact, my wife initially thought something was wrong. When I showed her the package she reminded me that I always say the Museum Members are awesome, so why should I be surprised?

Which is, of course, why the Museum is so awesome - even though you know the people are fantastic, they still have the capacity to surprise you with how fantastic they are. To all who had a hand in this - I thank you from the depths of my weary soul. I am truly touched, and you have my heartfelt thanks. It's yet another example of why this place is so damned cool.

    Thankfully,
    Derek

PS: Chuck, Berto, Tom, Bill, and Ron - The NYC trip is a GO! The wife and I will be in town for the entire weekend, and if you are in town we'd love to have you out for dinner I'll send you the details.

Hard to beat good friends. That is really cool that they did all that for you.

Hey Derek, we did certainly miss you at the meet this year. Chatting with you on the phone was really the only downer of the meet. It just didn't seem right that you weren't there. Hopefully things will slow to a reasonable pace for you so you can actually breath.

At least you're going to get a chance to hit NY with a few of the guys. Wish I could make that. It's hard to pass up any chance to get together with that group.

I feel for you on the hours, Derek. I've got something similar going on right now. Glad you are able to make a cool trip to NYC. I haven't been up there in about 7 years.
          It's all good!

I'm embarrassed to admit that I have been helped by SO many people here I sometimes forget who did what for me. Wasn't it someone called Flynne who shipped an emergency Hulk so I could take pictures on one of my overseas vacation?

Yes, that was me. Only here could you find a situation that requires an emergency Hulk figure.

Yeah, agree about the Sox shirt, haven't lived in the Metro Boston area for over a decade (born in nearby Cambridge) but I still consider myself a Sox fan ... (going WAY back to the classic days of Carl Yaz, Rico Petrocelli, et all...

Even though I am from Kansas, my family is a dyed-in-the-wool BoSox clan. It comes from my dad who has been a Sox fan since the Splendid Splinter (and later Yaz and Pudge), and who, to this day, still comes to Bill Buckner's defense with a resounding "Buckner was playing hurt to stay in the lineup where they needed his bat even though he was hobbled. You want a goat? Calivin "Long Ball" Schirraldi is the one who blew Game 7. How many home runs can one pitcher give up in a Series game?!"

That's what it's all about, period. Everyone (inlcuding me) who has to drive a bit vents about it when they get there but it's soon forgotton about once everyone gets togther. I think the "4 fat white guys" comment elicited one of the bigger laughs of the night!
