Aside from Leidy and Basa, are they any other locally produced Mego variations? I was just wondering if there are any other treasures to be discovered.

I wonder if other Central and South American countries had similar laws dictating that production had to happen locally. Is anyone familiar with the laws of other nations. If Peru manufactured, I wouldn't be surprised if Brazil, Argentina or Chile had a market base to sell to. I am not, however, familiar with their laws.

My money is on Brazil and Uruguay.

Don't know of any others though. At least none from recent years. I think we'll see even more from the recently discovered Mego sublicense countries...

The hardest part about this will be the Knockoff Market and the lack of catalogs and packaging.

Let's Hope!! There was an incredible amount of South American Spidey merchandise produced in the 70's and 80's with new finds occuring regularly. I think it's only a matter of time before something surfaces.

I could definitely see Brazil. A bunch of unique stuff from other toy lines have shown up there, so why not Megos?

The hardest part about this will be the Knockoff Market and the lack of catalogs and packaging.

That will be the tricky part. Tons of knockoffs abound, and how long did people think Ledy stuff were boots until packaged ones started showing up.

I contacted the seller of my Basa Batman and she said there were no others besides the ones we already know of

I did a little research and found the following about a few of the countries and Import Substitution Laws. The laws have since been pretty much universally rejected, but variations do exist is some of the more closed states around the world.

Brazil - they did have Import Substitution Laws, but they may not have had a strong enough base for sales. There was an upper class, but most of the country did not have the type of expendable cash for superhero dolls.

Argentina- they also had Import Substitution Laws and probably the strongest middle class in South America. That makes them a strong candidate for local Megos.

Uruguay- like Argentina, they had the Import Substitution Laws/decent middle class so they should be considered, also.

Chile- the first South American nation to drop their Import Substitution Laws. When Pinochet came in in '72, he opened them up to foreign imports so they are out.

Import Substitution Laws were apparently prevelant through Latin America AND Asia and some places in Africa. Maybe we need to dispatch teams around the world and begin our search

Nice research, that helps make the possibilities clearer. Maybe we should also consider how popular the main superheroes were in each respective country during the 1970s (i.e. popular enough to make it worthwhile for a local toy company to take a chance on manufacturing and selling such figures). I have no idea how to gauge such a thing though.

Did the Lili Ledy folks have a sub-license from Mego? I am pretty sure the boxes say something about mego on them. How about Basa? Or were these all mego-like as it were.

If they were licensed from DC/Marvel through Mego, perhaps there is a former Mego employee who would recall the non-USA markets.

Or, perhaps there is a way to trace licensing from DC or Marvel.

Ledy definitely sub-licensed the WGSH from Mego (Mego's name is clearly on the Ledy boxes stating as such. Just like Kenner's name is on the Ledy 12" Star Wars boxes). Not sure about BASA, but I'm guessing yes. Mego probably held the master license for jointed superhero figures at the time, so foreign companies had to go through them.

BASA's box does not say MEGO. It does say NPP for the Robin, though.
