    I Never Realized....

You know, I've been researching Mego the past couple of days, because if I'm going to be a regular around here, I want to know a little about what I'm talking about (By the way, got my first Action Jackson on the way). I decided on Mego because I remember as a kid I had several superheroes and Action Jackson and Star Trek figures.

But now that I've researched Mego, I'm amazed at just HOW MANY of the toys I had were made by Mego, and I never knew it! Up until now, I'd thought that in honesty, G.I. Joe was the main toy from my childhood. But I see now, in retrospect, that Mego played a far greater role in my playtime. For instance, as a kid, I not only had the Worlds Greatest Superhero figures, but I had a Robin "Pocket Hero," a Commander Koenig from SPACE:1999, "Dracula" and "Frankenstein" from the monster series, a couple of characters from "THE ROOKIES," and probably some others that I'm forgetting.

It almost seems like Mego back then was what Hasbro is today in the world of action figures.

The Rookies were made by LJN but they are so Mego like it's easy to confuse them. When I first came here I had no idea of how many different things Mego made. Kind of like opening up a big treasure box of goodies! The galleries here are a terrific way to pend some time.

If you're in the United States, i'm assuming the Commander Koenig you had was made by Mattel and not Mego.

Mego's "Captain Koenig" was only released in the UK.

BUT... all the other figures you mentioned were, ideed, Mego. ALSO, the influence of Mego on the action figure market in the 70's is hard to underestimate. The confluence of their line with the popularity of superheroes made them a powerful company (for a little while, anyway).

          Commander Koenig

I'm aware of the Koenig from the Mattel line, so I'm not sure how I got hold of it, but I distinctly remember an 8 inch Koenig who was the same size as the other Megos. I do remember it came from Goodwill though.

Oh and Planet of the Apes is another that, as a kid, I did not realize also came from the same guys who made the superheroes.....and I had most of the Apes. And the Micronauts.... I had several of those guys too and never caught the Mego connection.

                Re: Shogun

Ah yes, I know we're getting off the Mego track a bit....but I had one of those Shogun Warriors too...and this was when I was like 14! Acroyear. Didn't really play with them at that point, but thought he looked totally cool. In fact, I'm convinced if I'd had the Shogun Warrior in my Mego days , he would have been a giant villain for the superheroes.

When your a kid you dont care what company made the toys.I had planet of the apes, star trek, several others made by Mego. The word "Mego" was not in my vocabulary until about 4 years ago,i decided to do a search on Ebay for "The planet of the apes guys" that i had as a kid.Thats what lead me here. But yeah it is amazing how big Mego was in the seventies and eighties.

Congrats on the AJ. Thats way cool. I would have to say that my favorite line would have to be the WGSH. Definately a great line. My Second would have to be Star Trek
