    New Member's Birthday Message

Wow am I glad I found THIS board! Hi folks, my name is Richard. A bit about myself. I work at home as a freelance copywriter / freelance journalist. About to turn 42 years old this week. Now here's how all of that info. ties together. Because I work at home for myself, sometimes I have to force myself to stop working. So I decided I need a hobby.

But the problem is I've gotten bored with hobbies in the past when I tried to force myself to do something I'm not really interested in. Stamps, baseball cards, they just couldn't hold my attention for long. But suddenly, with my birthday coming up, I started thinking about the presents I used to get as a boy. And my number one passion then was MEGO ACTION FIGURES! So I started searching around and looking at pictures and Youtube videos. Suddenly it dawned on me: That passion for MEGO still exists! And so this was--and is the hobby that I can be excited about and never....NEVER....lose interest in.

I also have an interest in old TV shows and movies, so I think for right now, I'm going to focus on collecting Megos related to old 60s and 70s TV and motion pictures. You know, Star Trek, The Rookies, those Universal monsters, etc.

What a great birthday it's going to be....maybe I can even find a Mego on my birthday at a local flea market to help me celebrate my day. But my question for you guys: How do I really get started in the hobby? Where do I look? What resources can help me? Anxious to score my FIRST MEGO!

Sounds like you're going to fit right in here. As for picking up some Megos you can try the Marketplace section here on the boards or Ebay. Good luck in your hunt and enjoy your stay!

Some good advice for eBay is to search a particular, easier-to-get item. You can track how much it sells for to get an idea of what you should pay. You can also ask around here and get pretty good advice.

Start with a loose Spidey or Superman. Once you hold one again, all those nostalgic feelings will wash right over you.

Patience, however, is a virtue with Mego collecting as well. A lot of the fun is the hunt and waiting and collecting information will make the buys more satisfying.

Also, there's lots of talk about other toys lines and general 70's goodness here.

                  Welcome aboard and good luck,
                  Bill

Welcome to your new addiction. Like the others said: look in the marketplace or eBay for Megos, plenty to go around
As far as a new hobby goes (and with you be a fan of the old TV shows), maybe you should look into not only collecting, but also customizing Megos. Nothing more fun than creating your own Mego figure

Hey folks, thanks for all the great advice and the friendly welcomes. I was over on eBay and looked up Mego. I saw sometihng that I'd forgotten about that totally rocked my world when I was a kid: ACTION JACKSON. Maybe in addition to the movie / TV route I might investigate getting a few AJ's. Question: There's an Action Jackson on eBay in original box that I could get for $35. Is that reasonable?
