    I prefer vintage.
I buy some EMCEs, usually the "unproduced" figures.
I have all vintage ST Megos, except Mugato (damn you, monkey!), so I don't really feel like buying the EMCE versions, unless it's a great deal...

But I have noticed that prices for loose vintage Megos seem to have dropped lately. Allowing me to finally get some WGSHs.... YES!!!!!!

I think that MIP Megos will always do well, no matter what EMCE releases.

      Vintage.
I dig the EMCEs, Castaways, and other repros, and while Custom figures are a blast to make and collect IMO, nothing takes the place of the vintage ones.

Nah...that's like saying people stopped buying old comic books (from the 1930s - 1970s) because reprints for many of them are readily available. If anything, the original comics have become more scarce, more valuable, and more desirable over time, not less so.

What may in fact shrink the number of collectors and buyers for vintage Megos isn't the existence of reproductions, but a more general absence of nostalgia for the original toys. I'm new to this game, but my guess is that the vintage Mego market is being driven at the moment almost exclusively by late thirty-something and forty-something collectors -- i.e., former 1970s kids who played with Megos when they were growing up, who are now old enough to be nostalgic for them, and who are in their prime earning years and have the disposable income to spend on them. So finding new collectors and keeping them interested is critical to the long-term health of the market. If the new production and repro figures help to do that, then it's win-win for all of us!

        Best,

        Mike

If that were true no one would be buying the vintage Star Wars figures since the new ones came out.
It's not a doll it's an action figure.

I've got both original and EMCE.
There will always be people that prefer vintage over repro

It may be considered a dirty word but 'money' plays a big part too. Regardless of why you collect now, it is always at the back of your mind that hopefully you should be able to recoup your outlay on original items in the event of selling your collection. That is probably never going to happen with the new stuff.

But the old stuff was the new stuff once and that is worth money now.

Yeah, but the old stuff was mass produced for kids and used and abused by them as a toy, whereas the new stuff is targeting the more refined adult collectors who take better care of their goodies. It's not like the new Mego-style figures won't be saleable in the future, but the old stuff will always command a premium...

True, but you only have to look at the Star Wars and Star Trek stuff that has been churned out over recent years. A lot of people bought/collected with speculative investment. Because so much of this stuff is bought and put straight into a box the long term value plummeted rather than rose.

Some of the short packed figures command a premium, then again its only worth how much someone is willing to pay for such things.

If your into collecting for the money then its like playing the stock market, things go up aswell as down,so really your just a speculator, collecting should be FUN wether it be new or old.

It must be hard for people that do collect just for the money to enjoy what they do - they must be more like dealers really.

Whilst I am in this for the fun of it, there is no way I would splash the cash if I knew it would be worthless tomorrow, regardless of the pleasure it gave. I just think that the 'money' issue is sometimes a bit of a taboo subject among fellow collectors.

I think if people do collect for the money side then they are really like a sort of dealer or make a quick buck. Also there are collectors who may sell there collection later on in life as we all know the pension side is not in a good state

Don't get me wrong i have sold some of my collectables off only to get the funds for something else that i wanted for my collection,so thats another avenue on the collecting side i guess?

Enjoy what you collect its all FUN FUN FUN except when you run out of room

As much as i love the remakes they are not originals. Until someone makes a repro that you can't tell from the original, they will never be the same. I don't think you can duplicate them perfectly. I'm talking height, weight, feel of the plastic, everything about them.

I'm new to this so bear with me if this sounds stupid, but why can't they take the old molds and reproduce them? There has to be specs on how they used to do everything from designing the molds and paint schemes and paint types to mass producing a given line of megos and clothes, right? Or is everything lost in Hong Kong? Is it possible that this stuff still exists there?
If you need a hole, I can dig it.
