The Genesis of the Mego Soldier Ape Figure

Today, we have not one but two different stages of prototypes for the Mego Planet of the Apes Characters.
These original samples have been rumoured to exist for years and now we finally have beautiful full colour shots of the very first Mego Planet of the Apes characters.
Not only do we have the original hand made prototype but an early factory test shot of the Soldier Ape (or as early advertising states "General Ursus")

Click Here to see the original Prototype Soldier Ape figure by Mego.

Also, don't forget to register for this year's Megomeet convention, which is being held this June 5 & 6th in Wheeling WV. Admission is $20 and a dealer table (which includes admission) is $32. It's the only all Mego event of it's kind. Click here to register.

            Very cool,

I don't think this prototype was the one that appears in the ORIGINAL ad above.

            They look different.

Definitely a different soldier than in the ad. But the original posting says, "Today, we have not one but two different stages of prototypes." Does this mean there is another prototype headed our way? (he said, strapping on a bib to battle the forming drool)

I really like the chest piece for this one, though. It really looks a little more like leather armor might. It also looks a bit like a cloth rendition of the idea on the ape on the stallion box- again, leather armor.

Very cool. The vest portion of the outfit on the top ape looks like the prototype in the ad ("This one's too smart, we better take care of him").

The resin head copies are very interesting! It's amazing how many stages this thing went through, including the design on the Stallion box and the pale faced examples.

These hand made tests are so fantastic. Can you imagine if the hand-made Superman ever surfaced?

I always wondered why they had gloves on the soldier ape but not the others.
