To open or not to open?

Here's a question for collectors that I'm curious about:

When you get a mint on the card (or box) Mego that's never been opened, do you ever open it or always leave it sealed?

I've only opened 2 sealed Mego's in my whole time of collecting ......

A MOC broken leg Captain Kirk and a MOC broken leg Hulk.

I'm not one for setting MOC figures free.

Good question. I have trouble bidding on some things because I'm looking for loose guys but some are way more common carded than loose. Plus at least carded you know you're getting a complete, clean figure. I'd hate to open the package after someone kept him that way for 30+ years yet I want to touch it, pose it, etc so it's kinda like a slabbed comic to me: useless for any purpose other than investment. Unless you can actually enjoy it for it's intended use, or you are a completist, it seems pointless to buy carded figures. Yet once you open it you decrease the value. It's one of those catch-22's. Of course some people only like carded figures and they can spend their money on those till the cows come home. If I bid on one it's likely that I will only bid so much as I feel comfortable knowing that I will probably open it. Or maybe try trading for a nice loose one. Boxed stuff I don't mind as much because those can usually be reboxed easily enough. I just won an unused AJ wild mustang that I fully intend to display out of the box.
I guess it just boils down to how rare it is whether or not you should uncard/unbox it. I would never do that to something super-rare like a Romulan or Mugato but then again I don't have the money to be buying stuff like that anyway so no need to worry about it. LOL

I have freed a Hulk, Uhura, Mr Fantastic and Daisy Duke. They were all on beat up cards and cost me no more than a good loose example would have done. There is a pleasure that is hard to explain when you do. It's a personal choice but I would never do it if it were to devalue the item.

I say, do it at least once (on the right item) - you won't regret it.

          Weird Mego Commercial.

I wonder how their legs break when mint on the cards. I've certainly seen them like that though.

Depends on the figure, if it's tougher to find there are plenty of people who will tade you $$ plus a mint unplayed with version to obtain it. But if it's Kirk or something like the ones mentioned here, it's an affordable luxury.

I think with Mego I would leave it MOC ... unless maybe a trashed packed common Dukes of hazzard figure. I have taken vintage star wars figures off damaged cards so I could have a nice mint complete figure in my loose set.

one thing for sure ... guys if you ever get a moc 1982 to 1987 GI Joe figure ... no matter how bad the card is ... keep it sealed ... wow have some of those guys jumped in value

Just out of curiosity, if they have broken legs do you still consider them mint?
They're not really MOC, just carded figures IMHO.

I never open sealed figures. With dirt common figures I don't see any problem tho, but otherwise it'd be a real shame to open them up

My thought has always been that a happy toy is a played with toy, and almost all of my toys are happy ones.

i like to buy figures on a beat up card or figures that have broken limbs or loose emblems, that way i can justify opening them and not feel bad about it. within the last year, i've ripped open a 1975 captain america, 1979 penguin, french carded hulk, 1979 superman, french carded the thing and mr. fantastic and 1979 batman all mint on card. i like mine fresh!!
