Why I should never sell Megos

I have the most horrible luck selling Megos. Other toys, other things? No problem. But I always get taken to the cleaners if I'm selling a Mego. Right now, I'm selling off my Ape collection to pay for another hobby and I'm focusing on my Heroes (done except for some accessories) and Trek.

I saw a maroon soldier ape go for around $80 two weeks ago. Mine was in the same condition, minus a glove, and...well, let's just say mine went for a lot less.

I'm just getting this off my chest. I don't need your pity (just your money ). It's actually gotten to the point where it's humorous now. I lamented my unexplicable ability to sell a mego before and got a several people telling me that I wasn't in it for the right reasons because I cared about the value and not the nostalgic factor, whatever. Not to sound crass but if you feel that way, that's terrific. But don't lay the "in it for the wrong reasons" crap on me. I never, ever got into Megos for the money (thank goodness). I got into them because I loved that Batman and Robin figure with the silly gloves. But if I buy said figure for $80, then I'd like to get around $80 when I sold him.

    Okay, pity party over.

I have the same problem...seems like when I am buying/bidding, I pay much more than when I sell it (if I upgrade, etc)... just the nature of the beast

When I sold off a lot of my collection, I big-time took heavy losses.

For the most part, the Mego Collecting hayday is waning at an alarming rate.

My advice to anyone starting in the hobby, don't pay too much for anything --- because when you sell it (and you eventually will) you'll get 5 cents on the dollar.

Today's collector's would probably pay more for a Maroon Soldier Ape Museum card than for the figure itself.

Oh yeah, most DVDs are sloooow sellers on ebay these days. A big difference from 5 years ago or so. I've been trying to unload a bunch for cheap ($4.99 or less) and I just hear crickets. Many catalogue titles are dirt cheap brand new in stores these days, so it's hard to compete with that when selling used titles.

Although I'm sorry you're all in my boat, I'm glad I'm not the only one.

I was so busy this evening that I didn't realize your auctions were ending today. I was going to bid on those Soldier Ape figures. I also have a maroon Soldier Ape with a single glove so I would have been able to complete the figure if I won it. Anyway, I'm sorry that your auctions didn't sell as well as you hoped. I know that feeling all too well.

Well I haven't sold on ebay. I just have the luck of when I want a Mego I alway get a auction with someone else who wants the same item. If either one of us was not in it, it wouldn't go for so much.

Hmmmm.... I try not to sell anything and buy stuff I want; so the price thing doesn't bug me so much.

Collectibles are ALWAYS a bad investment. But toys are neat!

I started recollecting some of the WGSH lines (Robin, Fantastic Four, etc..), but decided to just stick with the Trek lines (old and new..). I did take some beating on the sales, but I get lucky sometimes (or perhaps I just forgot how much I originally invested in it a month or so back..). Just got a great price for my Batgirl auction, even though a good portion of her was Dr. Mego.

I just choose never to get into bidding wars ~ I just wait for the next one to come along, or buy off the Forum here. Finally got a MUCH-CHERISHED loose minty Kid Flash and MIB Uhura that way.

Only happened once, but a few years back I bought a minty loose MMM Doug Davis for around $40. Kept him for a few years, then sold him for $300. My wife was selling some furniture on eBay and just figured the incoming PayPal payment was for that..

Again, it's those rare moments that shine as a seller.

Any time I sell a Mego I always seem to take some kind of hit on it.

I'm the worst. I started selling my carded WGSH two years back to finance a Kresge card, even though I had bought these things on the cheap I was getting 60% return on average.

I suck at it and don't even try anymore.
