Geez, THAT was the book that my uncle let me borrow as a child and hooked me for life on Tracy! I still have the original book that my uncle gave me when I was older and a nice copy that hadn't been read to death by a 6-year-old!
I'd love to see the box that was made. Any link?

Just thought of that skit Robot Chicken did about Mr.Tracy. The one where he takes off his hat and well..........I won't go no further.

it's too bad the figures from the movie aren't worth anything.

remember when the blank from the movie was all the rage in the old toy shop days?

Well I could like Dick Tracy if they called him Richard Tracy instead. I really just hate the name Dick.

I remember back then that the Blank figure by Playmates was a huge hush-hush figure,..you couldnt know who it was under the mask until the movie was released,..but once it did,...the stock was sent to Canada?!!?? making it a hard to find figure back then (like the Batman animated series/movie The Mask of the Phantasm,...the figures werent available until the movie was released as this was also a surpise and unexpected character).
That "Tracy" movie remains one of my favorites too (besides Flash Gordon 1980).

I am a huge fan of the Flash Gordon movie, but really didn't like Tracy on the big screen.
It's been so long since I actually watched it that I can't recall what put me off, but I do remember feeling it missed the mark. The comic strip Tracy is my first love so I guess I'm biased. I just think they worked so hard to make it "comic strip"-y that they lost something. The same thing worked so well with Flash but Tracy is very complex and he seemed so one-dimensional in the theatre. (odd thing to say about a one-dimensional comic character!)
                      Just me though.
I don't mind the name Dick. I have a cousin with that name and grew up associating it with detectives (private dick). The name was originally meant to convey that link.
Funny story: A local newspaper printed a story on a local township and when it was founded. Turns out the people had the surname of 'Dick'.
Swear to God the headline read: (and I still have the paper to prove it)
                      "Local Town founded by Dicks"
                      Heh.
