The power of an actual Mego

I purchased an original Kirk, Spock and McCoy off of ebay for under $20 that I was going to give away as a gift since I have the repros. They are beat up and have no accessories, but as I was cleaning the outfits and such, I felt oddly compelled to keep them rather than give them away. (Not going to give the EMCEs away either, I'll come up with a different gift)

The other fun thing was my 5 year old daughter looking at them when I was cleaning the blue and gold outfits and asking me "Where's the red one?"
    It's all good!

The pull of nostalgia... my gosh, an original Mego is a thing of wonder. Seeing them on the card is really great... but an old beatup loosie is special, too. Especially if you restore it nicely without tearing it up (I've had both experiences).

I can relate so much to this. in the late 80's early 90's They opened the old Mall near me as a Fleamarket. There I found an old woman selling nothing but old actionfigures. Mostly Joes. She mentioned Megos and I recalled the ones from my childhood instantly. I had forgotten all about them until then. Thats when she pulled out an old Batman with bodysuit only. I bought it without hesitation. $5. Later came Ebay, and all the repro sellers and I've been addicted through it all.

            cool stuff!

... whats so nice is how these old megos still bring kids to them ... the colors and the fact they and move without falling apart ... it's magic, yeah some new stuff is nice but there's just something about these megos.

If you grew up with holding an actual Mego makes you feel like child again for a brief moment. Repros (though I'm not anti by any means) can't do that because they are just that: reproductuions of the real thing. Holding the real thing in your hands after so many years brings back a flood of memories.

Funny this thread was started..: A few months back while I was still in Kuwait, I bid on the Spock/Andorian repro set, the first Megos I've had any interest in for over a decade. Not even thinking I'd start to collect again, just a casual overwatch/appreciation.

OK, jump forward a few months: I've purchase the vintage Bridge crew, FINALLY bought an awesome Kid Flash (always wanted one..), some POTA, Starsky and Hutch, etc.. Now selling my remaining C/A items, some Vintage Joe items, and REALLY looking at the Dida displays, having invested some $$ in the new chairs.

                  It's definitely been this Forum..

When my daughter Gwen was 3, she saw the Enterprise box and said "Wiggles".
I didn't think about it until then, but the Wiggles wear black pants and red,
blue, yellow, and purple long-sleeve shirts. Kids don't focus on facial details,
                    they see colors first.

That means that Kirk is Greg, Spock/McCoy is Anthony, Scotty is Murray, and
                    Jeff is the Klingon?

That's funny, cause my wife said the same thing about the Wiggles. But here is a Star Trek update. This weekend my daughter comes in with Dr. McCoy and tells me, "I like Dr. McCoy, he's the best Doctor in the world, but he lives in outer space!"

This all comes after only seeing half of the tribbles episode, and asking me the names of the figures.

Oh, and I've always thought of Jeff more as a Ferengi than a Klingon
                        It's all good!

I always kept my Mego's from childhood and with the advent of ebay rediscovered my love of them. When my son Connor was about 2 he just could not keep his hands off of them. I actually had to put away my entire collection until he was old enough to understand you don't touch daddy's toys. Of course I also had to get him many of the superheroes as well as many of the repros out there and several customs I made for him. I am now going to start him on the Doc's Star Trek repros.
