Why IS Hulk and Thing so short ?

We all joke about it, and most of us hate it ... But the question remains ... WHO at Mego looked at the prototypes of Hulk and Thing and said "I LIKE THEM !!!" and who said "ME TOO" ?

Wilbur Cornwall (only been at Mego for 2 months) said in a mousy voice .... EXCUSE ME SIRS, AREN'T THEY A LITTLE SHORT ?

My take has always been that the body design itself was fine...

and that the MEGO guys were satisfied with it (obviously)

---but the MEGO guys DIDN'T like spending "extravagant"
amounts of money to use the simillar AMOUNT of plastic that
was used in a typical TYPE 2 body...

...so there goes the height scale on those overly muscular
"monstorous" characters.

Yeah ---I can see why the scale bothers some people---
but that's just the way that cookie crumbled.

HULK was one of the few Megos I actually had as a kid---
I was just as happy with him as I was with the other MEGOs
I owned....which is (I'm sure) why I'm content with him (and THE THING)
now as far as scale goes.

I've even gone out of my way to request that body when possible on
custom characters like BEAST and RHINO because it fits that
nostalgic "Mego style".

I must admit, it bothered me as a kid. Once I got my Remco Energized Hulk, I used him more than my Mego Hulk with my other WGSH. Mego Hulk became the "in-between" phase between Banner (either Superman, or later, Luke Duke) and the Hulk, and for some reason I liked having him "stuck" in that face from time to time.

Once I got the Hulk back in my adult collection, along with my first Thing figure, I wondered how I should pose them so their stature wouldn't show. My then 5-year old son suggested I should posed them crouched down, ready to tussle. It works really well!

Any taller they would also need to be wider and any wider they would not fit in the standard 8" box or bubble on the card.

The body is fine, I think. It's the lower legs that are too short.

I don't know but to deal with it, I Just display my 12 inch Hulk with my Superheros. Seems to fit pretty well with them. Of course ole Ben Grim looks pretty puny next to him but so is Superman and I think he could take him.

I'd be proud of him...that's some solid "adult" logic for a 5 year old.

I have heard of the saving plastic rational.

I also wonder if the size of a knee pin came into play. They did not nee to retool pins because hulks elbow equals a T2 knee.

Another thing is the reference art at the time. Look at Avengers 1-3. Hulk is NOT taller than the others and even appears squaty. Looking at early FF comics you see the same thing. So they are pretty accurate in that sense.

Actually, I'm planning on customizing my Thing ~ Taking a FC Hulk, doing the orange foam route after painting him, then using a Toybiz Thing head. If you look at it, the head itself is pretty comparable to either Mego or FC size. Just have to bust up the body and use that.

Or, simply use a Mego Thing body and be done with it. There was a nice auction a few weeks back with a minty Thing body and suit, w/o the head.., but didn't have the cash in time for it..

Would have to apply some repainting to the head, adding 'paint-wear' to the cracks with some black.

Would be great if I could use the Toybiz hands and feet somehow..

More than likely the answer is the same as why is Mr. Mxyzlptlk and The Penguin so tall.

When dealing with size remenber your dealing in 3 dimenions . the amount of plastic to make a correct Portion Thing & hulk is true. the shear Bulk of the figues in the 1/9 sale would be huge.even if you kept it 8 inches tall
take the case of the 12 1/2 inch hulk, for the a figure to be in correct scale of it , it would have to be 10 to 11 inches tall .
so the scale of WGSH Hulk with more with the 6 inch figures.
