Mego of the Day: Captain Koenig

Normally we don't do Mego of the Day on Saturday but seeing as it's September 13th, the day that the Moon blew out of orbit on the series on Space:1999, it seemed kind of fitting.
Are a fan of the Mego/Palitoy Space:1999 figures? What did you think of the reproduction line?

Let us know at the Mego Forum.

    Shouldn't it be "Commander".

Yes, it SHOULD be 'Commander', but the creative geniuses who did the extensive accuracy checking slipped on the show's main character.. Go figure.

Anyhow, I'm not a BIG spender on my interests (or on Megos..), but I can honestly confess that I got mine minty and loose for about $125 about 10 years ago and NEVER, NEVER regretted it. One of the best face sculpts Mego ever did, next to Capt Kirk, Starsky, and a few others. Dead on, Martin Landau.. He's worth every penny you can spend on him.

Keeping the white suit white could be a challenge (wish they had made the coloring more accurate..), but he's a definite highlight to ANY collection. If they would have made the belts like the tan Mattel belts (with the cool stungun holster..), it would have rocked even more..!

As for the remade line, I was one hoping for the blue snow suit variation with white turtlenecks. Oh, well.. At least they have the Yr2 outfits which is nice.

Actually, one hint for the 1999 collectors..: If you didn't want to spend time customizing a laser rifle, I've had them toting the Talking Cyberman weapons around for a suitable/cool replacement..

The 1999 figures are pretty dang cool, especially Koenig.

I got into these as a Mego collector. Thought they looked interesting even though I hadn't really watched the show back in the day. Mike sent me a copy of the first episode and I've been a fan since. Needless to say the figures became a must.

Koenig is extra special since he didn't get reproduced.

I must say, I never knew these existed for years. Had these ben available here, I can say without a doubt my cousin and I would have had them. We loved Space 1999. We had the laser guns from Woolworth.

My cousin got a Mattel Bergman one year for Xmas. While it was cool it was a Space 1999 figure, it had issues. First, it was Bergman, BORING and second, and most disappointing to me, it barely moved and couldn't hold anything. If the Mego/Palitoy versions had en here, I would have had Koenig and Tony for sure. I may yet get some CTVT figures. Wouldn't mind a Tony and Allen.

I had the big mattel Eagle, all 3 mattel figures and the command center. The Eagle was sweet but yeah I really wish both the large and small figures had more articulation or been able to hold more assesories.

Lo there do I see the line of my people back to the begining.
                Lo they do call me.

I had the Mattel Eagle, the kid next door had the Mattel Eagle. They went everywhere - crashed in the pool, got buried, crash landed in the snow. THOSE were awesome toys. Never got the Mattel action figures. In fact I hated them. I always wished Mego made figures. So, in my adult life, I discover they DID in fact make figures (but only for the UK).

I got myself a set of reproductions from CTVT, including some generic "spacemen" as they call them. I now proudly display a Doc Mego Koenig head on a black sleeved CTVT spaceman. Someday I will get around to swaping out the horrible body, and getting an actual Palitoy set.

I honestly think that the Koenig figure is the most accurate sculpt Mego made. I too have a Doc Mego resin head custom of him, but I'd love to have the original Mego.

He's a cool looking figure no doubt. I never really got into the line though because I wasn't a fan of the show and have no nostalgic connection to the toys as they weren't released here. Oddly enough though, I did have a Mattel Koenig as a kid (I didn't watch the show but I guess it was slim pickings in the toy aisle that day) , and have the Mattel stuff now (their "Sunshine Family" bodies are far inferior to Mego ones, but the head sculpts are really nice at least)

I'd love to have one of these some day. Its a great looking figure and I am a Space 1999 fan. Just watched the Dragons Domain episode this morning.

I have a set of the Mattel figures as well as the CTVT set. So disappointing that there wasn't a Russell and Koenig made. Anyone have a painted Koenig head to sell?

I never cared about the show, so I don't have much desire for the figures, but they are among Mego's finest, no doubt.

Besides the great head sculpts of the 1999's line, the uniform's deserve kudo's as well.

IMO, quite possibly the best Mego 8" uniforms ever produced for a line.
