Good Deal in an Unexpected Place!

    Hey,
So I somehow have gotten onto Hakes mailing list. Got their large catalog about a month ago, which is a very cool read and look if you can get one. 250+ pages of cool pop culture/political items. As I was looking through it, saw in a small little picture an item that I have been looking out for for some time - the Buck Rogers Star Searcher vehicle in box. Unusued and unplayed with.
So ,what the heck - put in a bid, a low one for what they have gone for in the past, and forgot about it. Yesterday, what do you know, got an email saying I won the auction:

    http://www.hakes.com/item.asp?AuctionID=60&ItemNo=73307

This item is a retooled Micronauts playset that was just redone to fit into the Buck Rogers line. Last one I saw on Ebay sold for over $650, so I am very happy I got it for half of that.

This is the third time that I have bid on something from either an auction house online auction or an auction house itself. All three times I got the item, two times for a really low price. I highly recommend monitoring these sites - if you put in a bid and just let it ride, you can be suprised how often you might just get the piece. I guess these places don't get as much traffic as Ebay, so you can find the occasional diamond in the rough cheaply.

Funny thing, I held that in my hands at Tom's (Tomart) when I bought out half his warehouse... If I had known, I would had snagged it for you... He had so much stuff I was more selective and some items I had no idea about value/demand...

    Congrats!

I like to look at Hakes, but usually the opening bis is already out of my league. Add on the buyer's premiuim and it goes even further away.

You must have a lot more money than me cuz EVERYTHING on that site that I looked at is OVERPRICED!
They just make up prices, it seems.

A few years ago I had a friend who consigned some memorabilia to Hakes and we had to take it over to his office in York, Pa. The place was FILLED top to bottom with everything you could imagine...I mean EVERYTHING!
I used to follow their catalog sales but then he sold out to Steve Geppi from Diamond Comics and everything went sky-high in price.

                        Hey,
Most of the stuff starts with a decent price, but then goes pretty high. What I found is that the larger the picture in the catalog, the more it will go for (duh, no kidding!!)
This set was really small in the middle of the page, so was probably overlooked by most people. The fact that there are probably 50 people in the world who would even know what it is, let alone want it also helped me get it at a low low price.
