Boba Fett Uniform "Wookie pelt" Question

    Hi guys.

Yesterday my friend's five-year-old called the "Wookie pelt" thing
    on Fett's costume "snakes".

I corrected him---but when I tried to explain exactly what
a "Wookie pelt" was, I realized I didn't know exactly what I was saying.

I was thinking that braid of Wookie hair was from a dead Wookie---akin to
the Indian "scalping" that is told about in cases where a warrior takes
the hair of an enemy and uses it as decoration.

Regarding FETT's scalp costume accessory though----is it something that
    HE ...um...."accquired" from a Wookie?

Is it merely a "tribute/homage" to the ancient Mandolorian tribe that
Fett's costume is (fictionally) based off of?

    Basically...

Anyone know the correct story behind Boba Fett's Wookie pelt accessory?

And if so----how would you explain it to a younger child so that
    he could understand---

He's okay with talking about killing/murder/etc. "STAR WARS style", I mean,
---and he knows a lot about STAR WARS in general---but, after all,
he is a young kid---and I was looking to explain it in a way that he understood.

Boba Fett - Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki says they're "braided Wookiee scalps", which seems to indicate they're trophies taken from slain Wookiees.

From what i've read, the Empire hated all non human species and enslaved the Wookies.
It's therefore likely that a few would have joined the rebellion and would have had bounties put on them ( Bossk hunted and killed many wookies ).

As for the pelts, i doubt Fett would have bothered to take them alive and maybe took pelts as proof to collect the bounties then kept them as a souvenir.

IMO you don't you don't wear a trophy you didn't earn, but since he is only 5 I would probably tell him it is just a decoration to make him look scary.

Some guys i went to High School with, went off to desert shield in 90 or whenever and got busted (Rightly so) for cutting off ears from slain Iraqis and making a necklace. Why would you want to do this is beyond me and this is NOT what I would tell a 5 year old, but the wookie pelts are probably a similar type of trophy for Fett.

You know, now that we found out that the Clones are like his brothers or something like that,I have to wonder if he actually got them himself? Maybe after the battle they had with the Wookies in Revenge of the Sith, one of the Clones took it off a dead Wookie, found Boba and said "Here you go. A nice souvenir." Or maybe not.

If you DON'T want to explain what they really are, tell him that Fett captures Wookies and shaves 'em to be mean, and keeps the hair to rub it in. Nobody respects a bald Wookie.
