I remember when the first episode of Battle Star Galactica aired over here. . .It was a Saturday Night I think. . .all the family gathered around and turned the lights out to watch it (Unusual event). . .and I think that one of the radio stations layed the sound track as well. . .similcast. . .so you could get that deep rumbling of the ships in your home. . . . .VERY COOL memory! Oh. . .and linking it with ancient civilizations here on Earth and the Egyptian style helmets. . . .that was SHEER BRILLIANCE!!!!!

EXACTLY. I loved Battlestar too! In 1978, Battlestar Galactica was every bit as awesome as the Star Wars movie, only better, because you could watch it every Sunday night on TV for free!

It goes without saying that Star Wars is undeniably the Box Office mother that gave commercial life to both of these TV shows, so is it really necessary to argue the point that they have resemblances to it?

I think it's unfair to call either of these two TV shows a "Star Wars Rip-off"...
especially since Star Wars was directly inspired by the old Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers serials. You have to remember that nobody expected Star Wars to be a hit either, because sci fi movies had been in a long, box office slump.

The huge, and unexpected success that Star Wars received was due more to it's eye opening special effects, than for having a particularly deep storyline--that and it made sci fi fun again. If you compare the story content of the first Battlestar Galactica mini series/movie to that of the original 1977 Star Wars film, BG is quite different, and in a lot of ways, delivers more.

I also think that John Dykstra's perfected his special effects techniques on Battlestar Galactica, kicking it up a several notches and greatly surpassing his own SFX work on the original Star Wars movie.
(except, that is, in the area of the live action laser pistol shootouts between the Colonial Warriors and the Cylons, which Battlestar's limited television budget just couldn't afford to do). Seeing all those colorful laser beams flying all over the place during the shootouts between the Rebel heroes and Stormtroopers was a HUGE part of what made the first Star Wars so fresh and exciting to watch when it was new! You had just never seen anything like that before! It was Super Cool!!!)

But I digress, this thread is supposed to be between BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and BUCK ROGERS in the 25Th CENTURY, right?

(and besides, Buck Rogers gave us Princess Ardala in her ornate, sexy little bikini, 4 whole years before Princess Leia got skimpy in her slave girl bikini in Return of the Jedi--so there!)

Here's a photo of my original Buck Rogers one-sheet, personally autographed by Buck Gil Gerard, Wilma Erin Gray (with love)
--and good ol' Twiki Felix Silla--"biddy, biddy, biddy!"

I liked the one Buck Rogers episode that had Flash Gordon in it. Wish they did a little more with that.

I liked Battlestar. I couldn't wait until the next Sunday back in '78. I had the models and the toys, etc. I liked Buck, too and it is hard to choose one over the other.

Most people compare Battlestar to Star Wars --- and many times call it a rip-off of Star Wars.
To be honest, I never saw either show as a Star Wars rip-off. If you go back to the Buster Crabbe Buck and Flash, one could say one was a rip-off of the other because they looked similar, but the story lines were different. I always looked at these two shows as getting a chance because of Star Wars, but I never watched either because of Star Wars. I just liked them

I liked Buck more as a kid. It just seem to be more aimed towards kids back then.

    I always felt the opposite.

I consider Buck to be a very mild form of Batman the TV series where it would grab all ages because of it's campiness, inside jokes and hot women ....
They even included many subtle Trek references that went right over most kids heads.

Battlestar, at the time I tried to like it ... but to me, it was way more juvenile then Buck.

I think it was more of a high priced Saturday Morning TV show -- in the same lines as Space Academy or Ark-2.

Back in the day, I never knew one adult that liked Battlestar.
On the other hand, I knew many adults who liked Buck.

Those two are way better than the two Glen Larson 70s TV shows.

Yep. With the exception of the "Return of Starbuck" episode of Galactica 1980 (which is great)--the best part of Buck Rogers second season was the character Hawk (the birdman) with his cool hawk-shaped spaceship. He was an interesting sidekick for Buck.

I was a BSG fan I thought Starbuck was cooler than Buck and no love for the BSG women Serena (Jane Seymour nuff said) and Athena (Marin Jenson as I see her now I can't get over how stunning she was).

cylons much like a terminator they never stop you can out run em for a while but you tire and they keep coming

if you want to inclde Galactica 1980 then Buck wins - as bad as the Searcher episodes were galactica 1980 was WORSE

That's a tough question. I loved both shows back in the day. But, I guess I'd pick Galactica. It was a little more serious and the Cylons were cool.
