    Question about Anderson's UFO

Never seen it before in my life

I'm a big fan of just about all of Gerry Anderson's shows, but I was not impressed with UFO (I watched episode 1 last night)
The effects were great (as usual) .......

But the story seem to be a rip-off of Captain Scarlett.

Also, the first episode seemed really boring.

Does the show get any better ?

I watched the entire series on DVD a few years ago, and
I liked it. It took me a few episodes to get hooked. I'd suggest you watch at least one more episode before dropping it.

The Ed Straker character grew on me throughout the series. I can't think of too many other mean, scrawny, scotch drinking, wig wearing, film studio running, global defense department leading characters that can match him.

It was originally concieved as the next season of Scarlett so that's where the familiarity comes from.....in my opinion this was Anderson's best show....it may take a while to get into as it's considered slow paced by todays standards but it's very adult storylines ( drugs, heart renching life or death decisions, treason, aliens using humans for organ transplants, hero's making mistakes that cost lives, marraige breakdowns and much more), yes I know that this is run of the mill these days but it was certainly the darkest sci-fi of it's time.
My advice is to see a few more episodes Mike before giving up on it....Straker's character seems hard and uncaring but there are moments in the series when his mask slips and he truely shows the weight of command and what he's sacrificed for it....

I've only seen the first episode, too, but I like it already. I have a whole set of the DVDs...I had to stop watching it because my four-year old was freaked out with the blue martian to the point of tears so I had to stop watching it.

Once you get into the "mood" of the show, you'll like it.
Give it a couple of episodes.
          I wish they'd made more...

It does. It feels really slow if you're used to newer series; but they do a good job of making you THINK you know what's going on, and then surprising you with the realization you HAVEN'T figgered it out. (Yes, they DO explain what the deal with the aliens is.)

I just watched epsiode 2 last night .....

              I'm starting to like it

              I still think it's a bit slow --- but it's interesting ...

Interesting enough, I want to see more ......

BTW, I can't get that damn theme song out of my head
Is UFO the longest Gerry Anderson titles/beginning ?

              Lastly .....
When Gay took off her wig ... I was shocked.
I didn't know it WAS a WIG in the show -- and was PART of her uniform.
I heard Anderson say that in the commentary

You have to wonder: If it's portrayed as an actual wig, why TF would the character wear it?
I have to admit that's pretty silly.
So if you're going to outer space, don't wear a helmet, but a seventies wig. That'll keep you safe...

The idea was that really flashy wigs would become the thing to wear in the future. (The show was set in the 90's.) Which seems really silly, BUT fashion in real life is really silly, and I think it was a nice touch to see a sci-fi show that acknowledged this sort of thing. You hardly ever see NORMAL culture in a sci-fi show! It's either a weird alien religion thing, part of the military, or exactly like some current or past Earth thing. Often directly relating to some plot point.

Definetly stick with it. It's a good show.

I read an interview years ago with Gerry Anderson and he commented that
the purple wigs worn by the female moonbase operatives is the biggest thing
people ask about the show. I must say that Lt. Ellis does look quite fetching
                    in her purple wig.

Note that the men on moonbase don't wear purple wigs. Thankfully.

Well wigs have been fashionable and THE thing to wear in past history, also some professionals STILL wear wigs as part of their job (Judges in courts over here)...so why not...
Love the music and effects in this show plus the whole tone of it...

                        Let's be honest for a second ......

UFO was cool because Anderson gave us 2 cool things to look at .......

Gay's VERY LARGE boobies, and super-cool SFX

Now i'm begining to see why i'm starting to like the show more and more
