    The Kamen Rider thread

Kamen Rider Geats ended this week. I'm gonna miss that show, especially since it is the first Kamen Rider I got to watch a new episode of, while actually IN Japan.

The gimmick was cool too, as was the concept.

I always approach the start of a new series with equal parts anticipation and teepidation, however. The Rider gimmick is cards again, which will make collecting the merch cheaper, but when a new series starts, the Rider is in his base form, and it takes some time before he reaches his peak. That's not to say they're not interesting, but it always takes me some time to warm up to most new riders (though I liked Revi from the start).

Ok, so talking about the new series might not have been the best way to kick off this thread. I was taking a cue from the Doctor Who thread.

Anyway, what are some favorite CLASSIC moments? Who is your favorite rider?

Hi. B! I can say that I have never seen an episode of Kamen Rider. Sorry, nothing against the series, it just never appealed to me as most Kaiju has.

However In reading various posts, I see that ( correct me if I am wrong) you have traveled to Nippon and have a good collection of Kaiju toys.

With that being said, what's you're take on Spectreman? I have been getting BACK into him and have read the Antarctic Press comic and AM TRYING to collect original copies of his 32 issue run from Brazil! Call me silly and an addict.

I have a few action figures of him. But limited on funds for ones I want. And it seems at G Fest he is not given much thought or respect in regards to selling merchandise on him.

Anyway that my thoughts. Let me know what works of wisdom you can impart on all this.

      Cheers!!

      Jorge.

        No offense taken.

I have been to Japan twice, and plan to return next spring. My collection of Tokusatsu toys is small, but growing. I collect both vintage and modern.

Funnily enough, it was Scott Pierce (Random Axe) who made me aware of and a fan of Spectreman and Mirrorman. And I love them both. Great shows, awesome costumes. There is plenty of merch to be had in the shops and alleys of Akihabara and Nakano, once you know where to look, and who to ask. I definitely need some in my own collection.

Sadly, such is the case for many shows that aren't part of the "Big 3" (Sentai, Kamen Rider, Ultraman). Many Metal Heroes, and other Tokusatsu heroes are just not as well known outside of Japan. Inaizuman, Aztekaizer, Diamond Eyes etc. Just don't draw crowds in the west. Even if they are Ishinomori, Go Nagai or Tsuburaya characters.

Anyway that my thoughts. Let me know what works of wisdom you can impart on all this.

Final thoughts are this...it's a double edged sword. While the characters' lack of popularity can make obtaining their merch more difficult, it also usually means said merch is affordable when you DO find it.

I love the show; discovered it in my late teens in China Town.

The OG series is quite good. It holds up, which surprised me.

I'll have to check it out. Just realized I left out my OG, Popy Popinika PB-95 Sky Turbo.

The first episode of the new series is free on youtube. But it doesn't have subtitles.

If anybody is looking to experience Kamen Rider, there are several series available on Blu Ray.

Discotek Media has the rights to the Showa era series, and have released Kamen Rider Black, and Kamen Rider Black RX on blu ray.

Shout Factory has the rights to the Heisei and Reiwa series, and have released Kamen Rider Kuuga, Kamen Rider Ryuki, and Kamen Rider Zero One to blu ray.

TokuSHOUTsu often binge plays various Kamen Rider series on their free streaming channel! That's how I've been watching until there's a good sale on the discs.
