With "WALL-E," Pixar at last takes the great leap forward many of us knew the company had in it. A "family movie" in name and MPAA rating only, it's a major visionary work, a sci-fi parable of astonishing scope and depth that is anchored by an adorable bucket of bolts and yoked to a sensibility that is - there's no other word for it - furious. It's also, by a substantial margin, the best American film of the year to date.

Sharry--the design is definitely borrowing from that Short Circuit robot. I was reading about the 'Art of wall•E" book and how it conspicuously doesn't have much in the way of design sketches for the robot...maybe they didn't want to give away how much they borrowed from the design?

And Hector---yeah, the reviews are so solid. What was teh reviewer at Salon drinking? She's like the only one in the country who didn't love it.

Saw WALL-E earlier today. I highly recommend it. Its cute and funny, but the backdrop is what appealed most to me. It offers a dark, pessimistic view of what we have become. Like all my favorite sci-fi films : )

The scenes on future earth are rendered so well, it doesn't even look computer generated. There is so much texture and depth, I was blown away.

I saw it today. It's beautiful. I loved it. It's more of a film for grownups, but definitely enjoyable. The background scenes are awesome. I loved the music in the film.

I gotta say, for some reason my bunch isn't as geared up for this one as usual with Pixar. But we'll still probably see it in the next month or so.

As for wall-e looking like Johnny 5 from Short Circuit, I heard the creators saying they had forgotten about him and its just coincidental. Who knows.

Same thing happened when Disney made The Lion King...they claimed they have never heard of Kimba The White Lion.....right.

Ahh haven't seen it here yet. But I do have a question to those that did. Realisticly WALL E is supposed to be a robot left on earth to clean things up.

Now he is either supposed to compact garbage himself or somehow do it another way. Now I could see if he was oh say a couple hundred feet high but he's the size of a small microwave oven. Doesnt look like he could move a heavy garbage can let alone clean an entire city or planet.

Sure its a kids story but that just caught me off the bat. They work that out or attempt to explain it?

Well, there were more trash-compacting robots, but WALL-E is the only one still active.

Still your trying to reclaim a whole planet here. Even a billion robots the size of toaster ovens wouldn't do jack. It would take Wall E a decade just to clean my daughters room.

LOL it alot like those cute little vac robots. These little dinner plate sized things zip around with like what? A 1/4 cup capacity storage? With a dog and two cats in my house the poor little bugger would take one look around after it popped out of the box and commit electronic suicide
