    >Lucas has said repeatedly (and as recently as two months ago) that there is simply no story beyond the death of Darth Vader.

He also said that he started with part 4 'cos the first three were boring. "Like a history lesson."

Eventually there'll be; in one form or another, a part 7. Star Wars is a fixture and a franchaise; so SOMEBODY will continue it.

I can't remember where I read it...but Lucas said originally that the Star Wars Storyline was 9 or 12 chapters (Memory gets worse with age) So why not do parts 7, 8, and 9. With the way CGI has gone you really don't even need the aging actors...just their voices. I say do them...what can it hurt. It's not like he's re-writing his own history.

I think the Lucas quote may be in the extras on the Laserdisc Box set...if I find it I'll post it.
"When not too many people can see we're all the same
And because of all their tears,
Their eyes can't hope to see
      The beauty that surrounds them
      Isn't it a pity".

      - "Isn't It A Pity"

As an "older" fan, I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that Lucas said there would be NINE episodes. He repeated it several times in interviews in the 70s.
So unless he condensed those in six parts, he's just being revisionistic (is that a real word?), and making it up as it suits him.
I say that there's more adventures of Luke Skywalker to be told, but everyone's entitled to his or hers views on this. Personally, I'd love to see Mark Hammill finally become a true Jedi Master. It makes sense...

as being a huge star wars fan, it would be cool to see what happens "next" so to speak...but realistically, it wouldnt be the same, i think. they are all really getting up there in years and wouldnt get around too easily...i'd imagine. so, i guess that all of the books that have come after rotj, will have to suffice. im just glad that he went in and did the first 3, to try and make a more complete story of anakin's life. and i love the clone wars 'toons...that helps...and with all the other stuff coming out later this year or the next, we should have plenty to keep us going for awhile..."should" being the key word there...lol....

No...there should be no Star Wars Episode 7. The Story is complete...but I am looking forward to the Live action TV Series. Even though Lucas said there wont be any of the Main Caharacters in it...it's really the Story of Darth Vader & the Emperor taking control of the Galaxy...so how can You not have Them in it???

Lucas did originally plan to do 9 movies, then said 6, then 9....not sure wheres hes at now? I do know Mark Hamil has said he was approached (this was back before the prequels came out--20th anniversary I believe) by Lucas, and asked if he would like to play an older "Obi Wan Kenobi" type Luke.
Ford was asked too. I remember him on some awards show interview, saying that Lucas had asked him if he would play and older Han...he flat out said no way (Lucas was standing right beside him during the interview)...then he mentioned that he might consider more Indy films if the story was right. This would also have been around 96 or 97.

Personally, I'm sure someday, someway, somebody will make more Star wars films. Dont know who will own the rights after George kicks the lightsaber, but whoever they are will be tempted by the sure thing money return (the prequels proved people will pay big money for crap...all you need is the Star Wars tag attached), and we will see this franchise live on.

                    Hmmmm....

I remember him saying there were nine parts too. Way back when; the first film came out, and I remember it coming back a few months later with "episode IV" added to the title. I remember the story of Darth and Obi-Wan's fight too.... and it was just like the fight in episode 3. (Even if he hadn't decided to make Darth Luke's dad at the time, he had a good idea of how Darth became a cyborg.)

I'd like to see stories in that setting WITHOUT the main characters. Like Trek; Star Wars has a HUGE back story, and I'm pretty sure someone other than the name characters did something interesting.

As to the interviews with Lucas from the late 70s in which he shared his vision of a 9- or even 12-part STAR WARS Saga, according to an outline supplied by Gary Kurtz (the producer of the first two films), Lucas only had a vague idea about what might take place in those speculative episodes. He didn't really have everything worked out like he tries to convince people of nowadays. The late 70s was a time when the franchise seemed wide open, before Empire Strikes Back codified the story as being the definitive father-son tale that it became. Lucas even speculated that each STAR WARS film would be about different characters in the Galaxy, rather than following the Skywalker family and the Rebellion. He was just throwing out ideas. The Kurtz outline gives really broad, vague ideas about what could possibly have been the narrative thrust behind each of the other 6 or 7 films, but there's no meat and in many places no conflict established. Evidently Lucas had a sister character in mind for Luke that was not Leia; she lived in another sector of the Galaxy and might have ben introduced in part 6 before Luke finally took down the Emperor in parts 8 and 9. But Lucas ultimately folded all these ideas (those that remained) into the last movie, Return of the Jedi, and jettisoned the chaff. What endures is a perfectly balanced trilogy (or sextalogy if you like the prequels) that ties up all loose ends in a neat little package. There simply is no more story beyond the redemption of Anakin and the death of Palpatine.

I think there's a good EPISODE 7 story to be mined with Luke and his "new Jedis"
going up against a rogue Solo-Skywalker child who takes after his ...ahem...
grandfather (more prone to anger/fear/hate -- and with a lot of Force power)

Then its "hello" to the old crew once again---with a younger genertation (or two)
                          as the main focus

I cannot disagree: that would be awesome! But trying to convince Lucas that SW is not just about Anakin is like trying to convince a dog he doesn't have fleas. Maybe after the live-action 2010 series opens up the Galaxy a little, we may have a chance for a return to SW films that explore the story beyond cute little Ani's death in ROTJ.

As to Gorn Captain's thirst for a Python/SW crossover, just go to youtube and search for "Star Wars". You'll find a vid of the Arthur/Black Knight battle from Holy Grail ("Have at you!" / "You stupid *******, you've got no arms!") re-done with light sabers. It is freakin' HI-larious.

I think a continuation of the "original" cast in a live action film will never happen. How about an animated version of Dark Horse's Dark Empire?
