"Steel-like jaws clacked away, each bite slashing flesh from my body - I used my knife and my hands, and when they were gone, my bloody stumps - and yet the turtles came."
Good for him. Everyone deserves a chance at happiness

Well said, George.
Did TOS ever deal with the issue of sexual preference? I remember the original crew confronting rascism on several occasions, but I don't recall one dealing with sexual preference until the Next Generation. (an ep where Riker falls for an alien from a planet that frowns on gender, I believe). I guess the TOS episode with Cheron was really about bigotry in general, so it could apply.

Nope. The original show never tackled sexual orientation. In the time it was aired that was too big a taboo. Though it was known in the entertainment industry that some stars were gay then, ( Paul Lynnde & Charles Nelson Rielly for example seemed quite openly gay. Anthony Perkins of Psycho fame was well known for his extreme sexual exploits back then as well-tho he was married and got a free pass from his wife), there's no way talk of such things was allowed and even portraying it on tv or in films was permitted in the 60's. Robert Reed who played Mr. Brady hid it for many years. To have such a thing revealed even in the 70's in America was to risk being blacklisted, I think. Your career and reputation would be ruined if it was made official.
Tho Next Gen did have an episode about an androgynous women society I felt it was a real cop-out. David Gerrold had a gay character themed epsiode he was working on and Rodenberry even promised the fans it was on his to do list but he quashed it on Gerrold. See the fan made Blood and Fire in New Voyages. That is Gerrolds original story re-written and directed by Gerrold. It should be interesting.
Lo there do I see my Father.
Lo there do I see my Mother and my Sisters and my Brothers.
Lo there do I see the line of my people back to the begining.
Lo they do call me.
They bid me take my place among them.
In the halls of Valhalla where the brave may live forever.
Seriously. I didn't even think coming out of the (transporter) closet was even a big issue anymore. If Star Trek has taught us anything, it's to be tolerant, to let people live their lives, and to embrace diversity in all its forms.
Too bad we never saw a prominent gay character in any of the series. Though with Janeway, I sincerely hoped she was lesbian. Really. That woman could crack the ****off a guy from ten feet distance.
Come to think of it, that show really sucked all the way through....

Trouble With Tribbles writer David Gerrold wrote a script for Star Trek The Next Generation ....
It was declined because of the controversial nature of it (at the time).
Today, rumours are Gerrold is in talks with Star Trek New Voyages.
Gerrold has supposedly rewrote the script to include Captain Kirk's nephew Peter Kirk (seen as a child in Operation Annihilate) as the lead.
He is written as gay.
I know a lot of people don't count New Voyages as canon, but the presents of Gerrold himself makes them seem that much more legit.
