Battlestar Galactica Definitive Blu ray box set review

Well I took the plunge and got the deluxe "Definitive" set in this new release and boy am I'm glad I did. The biggest difference between the remastered version and this one? It's an all inclusive set that gives you both widescreen and full frame versions of both the original series plus Galactica 1980. You also get the theatrical movie. Here's a online photo for reference purposes. As you can see you have two of each from the original series and 1980.

Why spend the extra money to duplicate the series? Well the remastering and clean up is descent on both versions, but the widescreen effect is achieved by pulling the negatives closer to fill in the screen. This has an effect of losing parts of every scene plus making the picture far grainier which creates an uneven viewing experience since you go from real clear images to softer less defined images. The full screen version really shows off the clean up and remastered work best and offers a really nice image if you don't mind the original ratio presentation. What I'm finding out though is I like the widescreen for the space scenes because it has a nice cinematic look on my 4K flat screen. The series has never looked better. But if I'm watching on our regular HDTV the full frame is preferable. Ah, the quirks of a die-hard fan.

I looked at price when I rendered my decision and surprisingly the differences were not as steep as one might think. I picked this up for $59.99 plus free shipping off EBAY. That's the series in two formats for both the original and 1980, plus the movie. The remastered edition, is $45 and only offers the widescreen presentation of the original series and 1980. No full frame and no theatrical movie. I thought the extra $15 was more than a good value given I'll put both presentations to use. I've provided a link below to a Blu-ray website that compared the widescreen images against the full frame so you have context. But as a BSG fan I am ecstatic to finally have this on Blu-ray and nicely cleaned up. The series has never looked better. ENJOY!

^I have the same set...your review is spot on. Full screen looks absolutely pristine. I guarantee it never looked as good, even in it's original release because we were all watching it on snowy 19" televisions! LOL

The Definitive Battlestar Galactica set is indeed a fantastic package for all die hard Galactica fans. Totally essential.

And as a companion set I recommend the Australian Blu-ray edition of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century...

Oh, I like the looks of the Buck Rogers set. Nice.

Is that Buck Rogers set All Region, or is it Region B Locked?

That BSG set is the one I knew I would have to buy as soon as they announced it. I have the movie, the series, and Galactica 1980 all on DVD currently, but it will be nice to finally upgrade.

Man, I thought they'd never release Galactica 1980, as it is basically the Star Wars Holiday Special of BSG! I remember scouring up fuzzy video files of all the episodes, wishing for better quality. I think it must have been the popularity of the new BSG series that prompted them to finally dust off and release Galactica 1980 when they smelled the money. And now it's on Blu-ray, no less...who'da thunk it?

It's a great set. I bought it for myself as a Christmas present.

There is however a problem with Disc #3 (The Magnificent Warriors). I believe that there is a few minutes missing from the widescreen version of that episode. The fullscreen version is complete. There is a replacement disk program but I like watching it in it's original format so I kept mine. I also read that the replacement disks were just jammed into envelopes and arriving with scratches.

              I googled this for you...

The issue is being fixed and consumers can get a replacement disc by emailing [email protected]. Consumers should include, “Battlestar Galactica Classic Collection: BD” in the subject line of their email and the following text in the body of the email, “I would like to receive a replacement disc for (Disc 3, Episode “The Magnificent Warriors”).”

Within 24-48 hours, consumers will get a response asking for their mailing address in the United States or Canada. Shortly thereafter, they will receive a postage-paid envelope for them to mail in their disc with the missing footage from THE MAGNIFICENT WARRIORS. 2-3 weeks later they will receive a replacement disc with the complete episode.”
