Well I took the plunge and got the deluxe "Definitive" set in this new release and boy am I'm glad I did. The biggest difference between the remastered version and this one? It's an all inclusive set that gives you both widescreen and full frame versions of both the original series plus Galactica 1980. You also get the theatrical movie. Here's a online photo for reference purposes. As you can see you have two of each from the original series and 1980.

Why spend the extra money to duplicate the series? Well the remastering and clean up is descent on both versions, but the widescreen effect is achieved by pulling the negatives closer to fill in the screen. This has an effect of losing parts of every scene plus making the picture far grainier which creates an uneven viewing experience since you go from real clear images to softer less defined images. The full screen version really shows off the clean up and remastered work best and offers a really nice image if you don't mind the original ratio presentation. What I'm finding out though is I like the widescreen for the space scenes because it has a nice cinematic look on my 4K flat screen. The series has never looked better. But if I'm watching on our regular HDTV the full frame is preferable. Ah, the quirks of a die-hard fan.
I looked at price when I rendered my decision and surprisingly the differences were not as steep as one might think. I picked this up for $59.99 plus free shipping off EBAY. That's the series in two formats for both the original and 1980, plus the movie. The remastered edition, is $45 and only offers the widescreen presentation of the original series and 1980. No full frame and no theatrical movie. I thought the extra $15 was more than a good value given I'll put both presentations to use. I've provided a link below to a Blu-ray website that compared the widescreen images against the full frame so you have context. But as a BSG fan I am ecstatic to finally have this on Blu-ray and nicely cleaned up. The series has never looked better. ENJOY!
