    Colin Baker Appreciation Thread

Just watched Mark Of The Rani....

    I enjoyed it AGAIN.

Still can't figure out why so many people have Colin listed so low in their FAV Doctor's list's ?

Perhaps i'm a bit bias because he's the only Doctor i've ever met --- (met him in the mid 80's and he was super-cool in real life)

But besides that, he was a GOOD Doctor

    What do you think ?

Does Colin deserve being know as THE WORST DOCTOT EVER in many fan circles ?

The pinnacle of JNT's excess happened in the Colin Baker years, it became dark, over the top violent with crummy writing and an unlikable guy shouting while wearing a clown suit.

I'll attest to not minding trial of a timelord, even found Baker likable but a lot of that era is lamentable.

Unfortunately Colin was let down by all and sundry with regards to his tenure as the Doctor, bad scripts, lack of budget, JNT actively looking to get sacked/removed from the programme (he'd said he'd had enough and wanted to move onto other tv but wasn't ever taken seriously as he was "that Dr Who guy", awful monsters, a BBC controller who actively hated the programme, a loud costume and script writers that never understood that the reason his Doctor was unlikeable and tetchy at the begining was due to a bed regeneration and the idea was he was going to be more Hartnell like calming down overall but with the odd outburst of impatience or frustration.
There are not many stand out moments in the Colin Baker era..only Varos, Rani and some of the Trial stuff for me...the whole trial idea was a good one but when one of the best Who writers (Robert Holmes) dies before completing the story(last 6 episodes an unknown story and linking/finishing with the 2 part "Time inc.") and you hand it over to hacks to finish it off and the script editor resigns over an arguementa bout the last episodes what do you expect???
If you do want to at least hear what the 6th Doctor was SUPPOSED to be like ...check out the Big Finish adio stories as they are suprisingly good and Bakers Dr comes across as far better than his tv version.
Hopefully if there is to be an anniversary show including all the remaining Doctors it would be nice if they concentrated on Colin and Paul's Doctors.

          Hmmmm....

I kinda think he had a similar problem to McCoy; that they were playing the part during a transitional time for the show. Yeah; Collin's Doc was dark, angry, occasionally evil.... which I think is FINE; except that they never really played any of it out. They seem to have wanted to change the tone of the show without changing the tone of the show. So you get stuff like "Trial" where Peri dies, but doesn't, but does.... maybe....

I've read all sorts of stuff about that time; where different folks in charge were back and forthing on stuff, and there was a fair bit of infighting. I think it shows. Same with McCoy. You could see them wanting to develop the relation between him and Ace more than most companions, but not. They set him up as a surrogate parent, but never really took it anywhere. (You notice this if you read "The Curse of Fenric" after seeing the show; since the novel shows, very clearly, where they'd cropped the story.)

Spot on with the McCoy stuff there ctc...if you look at what the crop of writers and script editor had planned for the next season the Doctor's relationship developed to the point where he was actively training her to become a Timelord and one of the stories was to be set on Gallifry.

I completey agree, though the BBc had been slowly reducing the budget over a few years and I think the fact that Perry was a bad assistant who obviously hated the job didn't help any. plus the trial thing was badly cast and the whole change of assistant thing with no meeting what was that about,

personally I think trial got green lighted knowing it would kill the show

You guys have some terrific insight, I just knew it was the period where my fandom lapsed.
