^^^Paramount should have just gone after the offending parties and left the other guys alone. Just my opinion.

They're definitely not ingratiating themselves to the fans by their current move.

Yeah but unfortunately the law doesn't work that way, you do have to kind of set boundaries now. Those guys pushed the envelope and they were forced to bring the hammer down. They can't let others slide now because it could be used against them in court down the road (actually i think stuff like New Voyages or whatever already set a dangerous precedent for Paramount) , should they also decide to push the envelope.

It's sad because so many of these guys flew under the radar or had a "nudge nudge wink wink" blessing but it went too far and infringed on copyright.

This does make me wonder where the fine line of suing and not suing is.

Would they sue the kids down the street who made a video with cardboard sets, playmates phasers and OFFICIAL Star Trek Halloween shirts ?

What if the above kids were just playing but mom decided to film them ?

I think that Axanar is at least partially to blame for pushing the envelope way too far, but I am not so sure the smaller productions would have continued to get a pass now that there is a TV show in the works. I'd like to see just a little more flexibility on the guidelines. I don't see how anyone can be mad at Paramount for legislating stuff like Axanar out of existence. It's competition, in some cases unfair competition, whether it 'makes money' or not.

I only like the new films because it's the Enterprise, Kirk, etc. on the big screen. The stories themselves haven't done much for me. I have found much more to like in the homemade stuff, and it will be missed.

I'm thinking of making a Star Trek TOS 50th anniversary Mego film, with guest appearances of the aliens and some customs, using voice overs of the original actors, and no fees to watch, unless I get sued for doing it?

At this point unless something gets magically done concerning the big 50 celebration, I may just consider doing it.

So Paramount just set up some guidelines for fan films. The gist of it is it says you can do them, but there are many stipulations. Most of them make sense. Some are definitely "huh?". It looks to me like it's aimed at the Axanar effort more than anything else. In the end, it basically says you can make them, but you don't own them. Don't make any money with them, and don't do things that might be offensive. To me, offensive was Star Trek Into Darkness, but I digress.

I don't feel these points for the most part are too Draconian. It is their property, and it's not a constitutional right for others to play in their copyrighted back yard.

Was hoping Axanar would go forward just to see Kate Vernon

Always had a bit of a crush on her and i'm surprised and happy she's still smoke'in

True, it did...and it was. I love TMP myself, but there are people I know that I don't want to bother showing it to, because I know it would bore them silly. And anyone under the age of 30 probably wouldn't make it through the first five minutes.

But some kind of happy medium between cerebral/slow paced and a nice helping of action would be awesome, and I think that's entirely possible to do. The new films are almost all over-the-top action and no exploration.

Not from me. It's always been my favorite Trek film. People back then unfairly compared it to Star Wars, and they still do.

That just sucks! I love Star Trek Continues, but I didn't get a chance to watch the last one (is the site down?) I would have rather seen that in the movies than the new films.

I've decided on my own to NOT go see the new film, Star Trek Beyond in the theater, and urging others to do the same. See my thread about it for further details if you're interested.

And you'd be right. But I'm doing it for myself regardless.
