I like what I see. As long as they don't go overboard with a last-minute twist ending/homage that will put fans teeth on edge, I'm good. I liked both films...and Into Darkness' WOK flip-flop only really bugged me after I left the theater, so I'm up for this.

But I will say, the trailer starts EXACTLY like the Civil War trailer. The one piano note, the dialog....can anyone NOT do that nowadays?

That's modern audiences for you, lol.

But we all know there's going to be nice chatter between the crew...like in the first one...

I also dig that we have new alien baddies here...no Klingons, Romulans, Khan, etc...about time...

Wow---they really truly don't care about turning off legions of old school hardcore Trek fans--- I'm not that hardcore Trek (so it really doesn't apply to me)----but, if "I" saw a "by the Director of The Fast & The Furious" promo for a new Star Wars (Skywalker saga---not "Anthology" SW), that just might have made me cry. Eww.

Imagine in 1980, seeing this promo: "by the Director of Cannonball Run": Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan

I see it as pretty much that.

Lin has directed racing/action movies and comedies. And is best known for his racing franchise.

Not too "sci-fi" 'round these parts.

I love how everybody has passed judgement on a movie they've NEVER seen based upon a couple of trailers. Personally...I'm going to watch the movie before I feel I have any qualifications to review it.

I realize that your comment was omnidirectional, but just so you know, I haven't "passed judgement" on ST:B. I watched the first two JJ ST outings and, while I had my quibbles with them (I still have to agree with Roddenberry's statement that a ship the size of the ENTERPRISE would never have been built on terra firma; the energy required to have a ship that size and with that amount of weight escaping Earth's gravity would be enormous. Same goes with basically turning a starship into a submarine; granted, traversing space AND undersea would require absolute airtightness, but in space, there is no pressure brought to bear on a starship's structure whereas underwater, it's all about pressure. But I digress...), I enjoyed them nonetheless, the first more than the second. The first one, because they were able to retain the essential spirit of Roddenberry's TREK even while presenting us with characters we knew, but didn't know.

This new one, at least from the trailers I've seen, seems----seems, I emphasize---to carry very little of the original TREK spirit and JJ and Paramount took a guy who is known for basically racing/action movies and I gather said "here are the keys; have fun." I've not read any interviews about Lin, so I don't known if he's a TREK fan or not (he may be one of the biggest in the world), but the sensibilities and imagery I've seen associated with this particular TREK don't encourage me to seeing it theatrically.

I'm not saying it's bad, I'm saying that, to my 52 year-old mind, and even to the eternally young TREK fan living inside me, this doesn't look, sound or feel like TREK. I'm all for everyone going to the cinema and enjoying the heck out of ST: B. But I will pass unless I get word from the grapevine that defies what I'm seeing in trailers. That's not me "passing judgement"; that's just me having an opinion and we all know what Dirty Harry had to say on THAT particular subject....
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

I've really enjoyed the the first two movies (the first more so than the second, but still a thumbs up experience nonetheless). I get why many don't care for the latest trailer out there. I finally saw it last night and definitely picked up on the odd tone of it. Not your standard Trek style film. That being said, I've been reminded quite a bit recently how trailers are often not accurate measures of what a movie will be (good or bad). So with this series, I am giving the trailers a pass and going to see this...ahem after I get in Civil War and few others I'm wanting to see. I'm waaaay behind on my movie viewing.

Trek films seem to mostly live or die on the merits of the cast and this new generation of actors have done an exceptional job of taking over the duties of some of the most iconic characters in sci-fi history. I'll definitely give this one a look.

Maybe it's just my personal bias showing up, but this is vibing more and more like "FAST AND FURIOUS: STARFLEET EDITION." And, much like INTO DARKNESS borrowed heavily from WOK, it looks like this THIRD movie in the new iteration will do pretty much the same thing the happened in ST III: TSFS---the destruction of the ENTERPRISE.

In this case, in wont really do anything but make me happy because I've never really been terribly enamored with JJ's design of the ENTERPRISE anyway; a little too bulbous and organic looking instead of being sleek and cool. Plus, I can't really say that audiences have had a chance to really make any type of an emotional investment in this new ENTERPRISE. It's like Hollywood, and studios in general, know the attention span of today's generation is similar to a gnats, so they force "events" (Kirk's "death" in INTO DARKNESS, Batman and Superman duking it out without even having met prior, and now the destruction of another ENTERPRISE) onto the audiences in hopes of recapturing that which has gone before. Only that which has gone before, especially the three events I cited, took decades to build up, with layer upon layer of stories and emotions to draw from. When Spock died in WOK, it took an emotional toll on me because I had known the character for SO many years and because the relationship between Spock and Kirk had been developed and nurtured during that same time. Same scenario goes for the destruction of the ENTERPRISE in TSFS; yeah, the ship had been refitted and cosmetically changed a bit, but it was STILL the ENTERPRISE I watched on TV for years and years, so much so that the ship had become as much a character as Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Seeing it's saucer section detonate and then watching its' fiery remains plunge to the ground hurt. A lot. Probably as much as it hurt Kirk to do it.

Don't care much for the new poster they unveiled, either. Again, looks and feels too FAST AND FURIOUS for me and ST and TFATF are two franchises that should never, ever cross lines. Heck, I'm almost expecting Vin Diesel or The Rock to show up in the next ST movie...
I'd like to see Vin in the next Star Trek movie. Especially if he shows up with a racoon. And tells Uhura "haven't I seen you before?"

To be fair---I wasn't judging the movie----just judging the trailer and PROMOTION being touted in the thread title.

I find it pretty amusing a guy that's known for the type of movies he's known for is making this movie.

As far as what I think the actual movie will be, judging from the trailer? Looks okay...

...but like you said, it's only a trailer.

Furthermore: The unfulfilled "living up to" hype of the first reboot Trek kept me away from even seeing the second---so, I have some catching up to do if I even ever see this third one.

You are so right! Star Trek has ALWAYS been about the characters(especially TOS). What I love about Star Trek has always been about interaction(and friendship)between Kirk, Spock and McCoy. The hardest part about this re-boot was recasting these iconic Characters that I've come to love since I was a kid...I just couldn't imagine any other Actors stepping into the roles(I'm a die hard Trek Fan, so I'm one of the hardest to please when it comes to this)...but DAMMMED if the didn't do what I though was impossible and pull it off!! With each new movie you see their friendship developing and they keep getting closer and closer to the Characters I know and love. BRAVO!!

                      Just seen the trailer

I dunno, to me it seems kinda Star Trek Insurrection-ish

Meaning, boring Trek entry centering on a new alien race I have no interest in.

But isn't that whole mission in Star Trek..."to seek out new civilizations"...meet NEW Alien races and so forth??

I dig Insurrection. I think it's the best of the three TNG films. (I find fan favorite First Contact to be overrated.) It is at it's core, a very Star Trek TOS themed tale, and isn't afraid to laugh at itself a bit.

So, yeah, I hope it is like Insurrection.

I really like this poster that popped up today. Not sure if it's official, but I dig the TMP/Bob Peak homage :

I like the font for the name. It doesn't look like the new style with the crappy "r"s in it. But the poster says 'fan' in the corner logo.

^That font is basically the classic Star Trek font...which is what they should use, no that "I took scissors to it to make it mine" version used for the CBS TV promo.

And yeah, nice poster, but it does look like it's a fan thing. It's better than the real "BEYOND" one, that looks like it's advertising "UP 2".
