CBS predicts huge profits off new Star Trek

CBS has projected profits of $400 million for their new streaming only Star Trek series. According to them it will cost viewers $6 per month to watch the show. That is a staggering $72 per year to watch ONE TV show.

I urge everyone, however big a fan they are NOT to subscribe to this...it is going to set a dangerous precedent. If this new series is a success, others will follow. If all the networks decide to go this route, you will end up paying hundreds, even thousands of dollars a year to watch shows on networks you are already paying for.

My DirecTV bill is already $120 a month. CBS is included in that. There is NO WAY I am paying another $72 to watch ONE show.
Imagine if you suddenly have to pay $72 a year to watch The Flash...and another $72 for Gotham...and another $72 for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D....and another $72 for Agent Carter. It's going to add up REAL quick.

This is downright scary and needs to be STOPPED.

Possibly, but a lot more won't. What CBS is doing here is blatant robbery, nothing more, and if they succeed, other networks will see dollar signs and pretty soon every popular series will become pay-to-watch. It will even spread to premium channels like HBO. You'll pay for HBO, but Game of Thrones? That's gonna cost you extra.

I feel it's unlikely they intend to charge per show, and are instead using Star Trek as a gateway to their entire streaming service which would include numerous CBS series. At least that's what I get from the articles I read. Most TV shows only have 12-16 episodes and wouldn't last an entire 12 months anyway, so they know people would jump on and off if there wasn't other content.

I love the idea of TV ala carte. I would cancel my cable immediately if I could just pay for the shows I want.

Now that I'm thinking about it, if they intend to follow Netflix lead, they will release all the episodes at the same time, which I can blow thru in a couple of weekends. Or one, really. So even if they charged $6 per show with no other content, I'm pretty sure I could subscribe and drop it in the same month.

Actually the projection was for five years down the road, after they have a variety of original streaming content up and running, not just Trek:

I think your concerns about having to pay for individual network shows is unfounded. I don't begrudge CBS starting their own streaming service to compete with Hulu (which, as referenced in the article, is owned by ABC, NBC, and FOX) and Netflix, they'd be foolish not to..

seems like it would be easier for CBS to hook up with Hulu instead. CW stuff is on there and its a part of CBS.
