      Aside from safety, I don't know why lightsabers used to have the bendy thin tip.
      That was pretty much a holdover from the earliest Kenner designs in which the figures had "double telescoping" lightsabers.

          Back in the day my toystore never carried official Star Wars inflatable light sabre's

          They only had knockoff telescoping plastic ones glued to a cheap black flashlight.

          The generic ones were kinda neat in their own right.
