Question for peeps who seen the original Star Wars back in the day

Am I the only person who thought tie fighters were named because the looked like bow ties ?

LOL, you might be. besides you are not far wrong on Vader, as Obi Wan said, he is more machine now, than man.

I was only five at the time so I honestly don't remember what I thought

I thought the stormtroopers were all robots. Couldn't quite figure out how Luke and Han pulled all of the mechanisms out so they could put on the outfits.
Expectation is the death of discovery.

        Is that not the case?

The TIE series, also known as the TIE-series, TIE line, or TIE family, was a series of starfighters and vehicles designed by Sienar Fleet Systems, consisting of several different designs. TIE series starfighters shared a general design form of a roughly spherical or cylindrical cockpit pod attached to a set of solar panels, with their overall shape resembling a bow tie (thus acting as a partial namesake).[1] This design form carried over to the non-starfighter products, with the standard...

Though the term "TIE Fighter" was coined because George Lucas thought they looked like bow ties...

I remember getting the Darth Vader figure and thinking he could fly. And why not? He was, after all, wearing a cape.

I remember that whether or not the stormtroopers were robots or not was a big point of debate in the schoolyard back in the day. I was pretty sure they were men in armor, because they had human sounding voices, plus Luke and Han wore the armor as well. But I think the Marvel comic book said they were robots (if I remember correctly), and back then you could only see the movie in the theater, but you could hold the comic in your hands to reference it... so it held a lot of weight in those debates.

The fact it said OIL on their backs added to this theory back in the day

I can remember arguing with a friend back in the day about the Stormtroopers. He insisted they were robots, and I said no way, people were in the suits. It was a heated argument!

                      That's weird.

I thought they were monsters up to when I read your reply

                      So they're wearing masks ?

                      --- never knew that

I knew the Sand People were wearing masks, but I always assumed they were a different humanoid species on Tatooine, not actually humans?

I can't remember my initial thoughts about Vader and the Stormtroopers, but I remember thinking that both R2 and C-3PO were real robots used in the film. I guess I thought that our robotic technology by 1977 was far more advanced than it actually was.

As much as I love all things from the Star Wars Saga, there will never be anything as special and unique as that short period when there was only one film... Star Wars.

I can't believe I've never thought about this until now. Never considered the possibility that they may be human either.

You were not out of line. Tie fighters did and still do look like bow ties.
