I heard a different rumor that Matt wanted a raise and the Beeb said no way but there is no way to confirm this. I would've liked a 4th season for Matt as the Trenzalore climax needed a season to build up. Sadly it is a lost opportunity.

I'd like to see the BBC make the decisions when to fire a Doctor rather than leaving it up to the producer.

If a Doctor is doing well it seems you don't mess with something good because the producer artistically would like to change things on his whim.

This is how we lost Tom Baker and it went downhill from there.

There were a lot of factors in Tom Bakers leaving the show and JNT did make changes that made Tom uncomfortable but various sources also point to Tom having become unsufferable behind the scenes. I love Tom as the Doctor but there was a lot more to it than that.

Possible, but Matt stated he didn't want to leave in an TV interview on the BBC, and said that Moffat made the decision. If this wasn't true, I guess someone would have called Smith out on that. Unless, of course, they didn't want people to know about "money talks"...
