George Lucas first film and an good low-budget sci-fi flick in it's own right. Very similar to 1984 in plot and tone. how many of you have seen it and your thoughts on it.

I've tried to watch this movie at least 4 times.

It's just soooo boring I can't take watching the whole thing.

Would anybody really like this movie if George Lucas was not attached to it ?

It's a fairly bleak and dystopian piece, but well worth watching.
First saw it many years ago, and now that I have the director's cut on DVD I revisit the film occasionally.

I love this movie. Parts were shot in the then brand new BART tunnels here in the Bay Area.

I'm a sucker for anything depicting a dystopian society, such as the previously mentioned 1984...and others like Brave New World, A Clockwork Orange, Gattaca, Logan's Run, A Boy and his Dog, Darky City, Blade Runner, 12 Monkeys, etc...

My late dad loved THX 1138, and he wasn't a Star Wars fan...but he enjoyed these types of films.

It's tough to watch, but you can still find some Star Wars DNA in it, especially with the sound design and electronic voice communication chatter (like the X-Wing communication systems).

He did it as a shortfilm first, then it became a feature film.
I love hardcore SF like this, especially from the "bleak" 70s. You knew you were in for a rough ride, and the ending was never "happy". You also didn't need tons of effects and explosions, it actually had a story.

I think it's a decent film. I'm a fan of the genre and era, it's slower paced than a lot of it's peers and probably at the bottom of the pile for me. Like a lot of these films, I'm infatuated with some of the design choices THX 1138 made, either by necessity or choice.

If I recall, Lucas mainly added some cityscapes to the revised version right? It seems to me there wasn't a lot outcry on that.

I liked it, except for the parts that dragged a bit.

And the ending was at least slightly happy; he managed to get away from the underground city, into the actual light of day.

Too bad that George won't consider a sequel to this; I'd really like to see what happened to the THX-1138.

It's been a long time (like since high school) since I read it, but doesn't the novelization end with THX meeting robed people living on the surface?

I think there's also some other CGI stuff when THX is losing it at his job.

And this is what Wiki has on the subject, "In 2004, The George Lucas Director's Cut of the film was released. Lucas shot new footage for the film, computer-generated imagery was used to modify scenes by expanding crowds, settings and backgrounds and adding digital characters, and audio/video restoration techniques were applied to the film."

You can see Lucas has lost his mind. The only change for the better was the crowded hallway shot. Making the cityscapes more elaborate nullifies his reason for wanting to escape.
