Rumor: John Landis claims Disney is going to release the theatrical cuts of Star Wars

Remember, take this as BIG rumor. But, apparently, director John Landis stated in a Q&A that George Lucas told him that Disney is going to release the theatrical cuts of the SW trilogy.

You are a bold and courageous person, afraid of nothing. High on a hill top near your home, there stands a dilapidated old mansion. Some say the place is haunted, but you don't believe in such myths. One dark and stormy night, a light appears in the topmost window in the tower of the old house. You decide to investigate... and you never return...

Never trusted what Landis said since the Twilight Zone trial.

Believe what you want but don't bet any money on it.

Can I act even more entitled for a moment? Yes? Okay...

Not only should they release the originals, but I would like to see some 3D conversions for 3D Blu Ray like was done with Jurassic Park and Titanic. Haven't seen the Titanic 3D, but the Jurassic Park 3D conversion is stunning.

I still have the VHS and nearly all the re-releases to Star Wars so if it does come out I will buy it again.

Here is a clip of Landis saying Disney is going to release the Star Wars movies as they originally were. There's an obvious edit after he says it and clearly some of what he said is missing. I'm guessing for legal reasons. But he definitely did say Disney is going to release them. So, that at least is true.

So someone from Disney told Lucas, who told Landis, who then told someone else.
And Lucas has pretty much disowned the theatrical cuts.

            Hmmm... let's wait and see...

This brings up an interesting point of ownership of the films. Disney now owns the concept of Star Wars but does that mean they now own the original films? I can't imagine Fox just gave up their ownership rights with out some serious financial gain. It was my understanding that Fox always had controlling ownership of the original film and varying degrees of ownership in Empire and Jedi.

He supposedly heard it from Lucas. They are friends.

Fox does not own SW. They have exclusive distribution rights. Last I heard, they have the distribution rights of Empire and Jedi until 2020 and New Hope pretty much forever. As seen by the multiple Blu Ray releases of the Special Editions since Disney has taken ownership, the two working together on SW isn't really an issue. I don't see either side wanting to turn down the kind of money SW releases bring in.

I forgot to mention Empire and Jedi no longer carry the Fox fanfare intro in the digital releases. So, it is possible, Fox has already lost some (or all) of distribution exclusivity of those two films.

                    New Disney/Lucasfilm fanfare.

I hope that's true, but I have a feeling they'll mess it up even if it is true, like put it out in the wrong aspect ratio, or with weird color adjustments, or something. Luckily, there are the bootleg "Despecialized Editions" out there to tide me over until proper blu-ray are released (if they ever are).

I have no doubt Fox and Disney could come to an arrangement I'm just curious to know what business entity owns the films themselves. Not just the distribution rights. I also wonder if there will be any sort of theatrical release to celebrate the 40th Anniversary in 2017.

I thought I'd better add this be a little more clear.

Disney owns Lucasfilm, the SW IP and the SW movies themselves.
Fox only has exclusive rights to distribute the SW movies. They have no rights or ownership of the actual movies.

So, if Lucasfilm tells FOX to distribute the movie, they would have to do it. Fox is under the same contractual obligation to distribute SW for Lucasfilm, under Disney ownership, as they did under Lucas ownership.

Thanks that clears it up. When Fox's rights of distribution end I wonder if Disney will treat the films as they do their own by only making them available every so many years. I doubt they would do that since they seem bent on milking Star Wars as much as possible. Such a move wouldn't surprise me though.
