    50th Anniversary Lost In Space

    ...was today!

Glad to see this. Space had really faded away over the past fifteen years. Deserves some final recognition.

Got mine yesterday and it is AMAZING. I'm just beginning to get into it, but here are a few highlights thus far - The high definition works best on the black and white episodes as far as upgrading the quality without taking you out of the story (some graininess detected in some scenes). In the color episodes, they read much more like sets now. Not that none of this was not already abundantly obvious when we were growing up watching them. But the high definition makes you work harder to suspend your disbelief. The boulders and landing debris around the Jupiter 2 definitely have more of a prop quality to them. What's bizarre is seeing the makeup on all the actors. That's getting perhaps too high def. But ultimately it plays to the right tune once you adjust to the new detail. The landscape shots are exceptional, especially in season one. While you can definitely tell where they used miniatures now, it makes you appreciate the craft even more. It plays to the right note.

The special features are some of the best yet for vintage television collections. My highest recommendation thus far in the bunch is on the bonus disc contained in the season three container. The surviving cast members sit down to do a read-through performance of the original script Billy Mumy had drawn up in 1980 to get the Robinson's home. Guy Williams Jr. fills in for his dad as John Robinson and another person, whose name escapes me, does an excellent performance as Dr. Smith. The reading is an actual performance that carries with it the John Williams score and has audio special effects. It's like watching a story on tape. It's superb and Mumy did an AWESOME job with the story. The original B9 robot is also there and performs as well. I felt like we finally got what we wanted as far as bringing that original story arc full circle. The special effects outtakes are also there (which have been seen on some DVDs I have), but these are incredibly crisp and there are even more shots than what I've seen before. They are remastered and stellar to watch.

The set also contains a rather large copy of the original B9 blue print used in the show. There is a booklet that serves as a reproduction of the shooting script for the "Reluctant stowaway" episode as well as individual theater-style cards profiling each member of the cast. My only issue with the series is the packaging itself. I'm not a big fan of folder-style packaging where the discs are all slid into cardboard slots that you have to page through. The cover that holds all three seasonal booklets has flaps that open at the top and bottom, so it doesn't serve as a great storage piece in terms of getting everything back in, including the huge B-9 fold out. So you have to be careful handling this since it's all fragile in construct. But the re-mastering is incredible and the bonus material thus far is everything a fan would want. I highly recommend it if you're a Lost in Space fan.

Sounds like an excellent set, MIB. Always good to see an old fave get an upgrade. Gotta say Fox's choice of packaging doesn't really inspire much in the way of coolness, though; lacks any type of WOW factor. This would have been a golden opportunity to put a decent sized and detailed JUPITER 2 replica into the hands of collectors had they chosen that to be the housing for the Bluray set. Add the JUPITER 2's landing legs and you could've had a really cool way to display this set.
sigpic Oh then, what's this? Big flashy lighty thing, that's what brought me here! Big flashy lighty things have got me written all over them. Not actually. But give me time. And a crayon.

^^^ Thanks buddy. Yeah, for all the tremendous contents, they sure seem to mail it in on the packaging artwork and design. But for what you get, it's an easy must-have. And your Jupiter 2 idea is fantastic. I imagine had this been the first release, that might have been a viable option. But since the series has already been out in many different formats, I'm sure they felt like it would be hard to find profitability in a deluxe packaging of this kind. Nonetheless it's a first class concept.

Took a gander at the innards of the50th Anniversary Bluray set and it looks like Fox definitely decided to go with a campier packaging vibe, counting on the general public's familiarity with the B9 Robot. Illustrations of the B9, however, do it little justice and makes me wonder if FOX got the same company that designed the dismal '67 SPIDER-MAN set to work on this set, too...

The decades channel is having a Lost in Space weekend marathon the entire season (1) and I believe
the first (14) episodes of season (2) to bad Mego never came out with these TV show figures, I think
it would have been successful, maybe FTC can get the licensing rights to create these? I did notice
there's an eBay seller, selling customs of the characters, the faces being used are fair, but they did a real
nice job on the clothing, pretty much dead on IMO

How is the quality of Season 3's ?

              The DVD's were terrible.

I heard all the master prints of season 3 were junked and all that's left were inferior multi generation prints.

Owning the DVD's i'm tempted to believe it --- the blurriness and ghosting make them almost unwatchable.

Again, how's the quality of the blurays ?

The Season Three episodes are incredibly crisp. I love the Anti-Matter Man episode. It's one of my favorites, so I actually started there. There's no comparison with the DVD release. It's pristine in every way I could have hoped for. There's no way they could have achieved this kind of picture from a washed out, multi-generational, print. I went through a variety of episodes on Season Three and the visual experience is identical. You can actually see the makeup applied to their faces. So I have to assume that rumor about the masters being junked was the result of frustrated reactions to the DVD prints. You'll be quite pleased here.

One additional note worth mentioning. I've read a slew of complaints about the packaging being damaged upon arrival. Mine was not. The corners are crisp and there are no dinged or crushed edges. But based on what I'm reading, I may be the exception here. I ordered mine from Fox which is where allot of these complaints are coming from. That and the fact they used UPS. So be warned, this could factor in with a mail order purchase.

                  Thanks for the info

Hearing that makes them that much more tempting

I didn't know this had been released on Blu-Ray. I celebrated the anniversary by watching the original pilot.
